A man died after being restrained by an off-duty police officer and a member of the public.

The 39-year-old was reportedly armed with a wooden pole and appeared to be taking drugs on Morrison Crescent in Kilsyth in Melbourne’s east about 11pm on Saturday.

He was restrained by a member of the public and an off-duty police officer before becoming unresponsive.

The officer attempted CPR and treated the man with a defibrillator, but he later died at the hospital.

ā€œDetectives from the Homicide Squad will investigate the incident, under the supervision of the Professional Standards Command, which is standard practice when someone dies in police custody,ā€ a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

ā€œThe investigation includes reviewing body-worn camera footage that captured the incident.ā€
