A man died after being restrained by an off-duty police officer and a member of the public.

The 39-year-old was reportedly armed with a wooden pole and appeared to be taking drugs on Morrison Crescent in Kilsyth in Melbourne’s east about 11pm on Saturday.

He was restrained by a member of the public and an off-duty police officer before becoming unresponsive.

The officer attempted CPR and treated the man with a defibrillator, but he later died at the hospital.

“Detectives from the Homicide Squad will investigate the incident, under the supervision of the Professional Standards Command, which is standard practice when someone dies in police custody,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

“The investigation includes reviewing body-worn camera footage that captured the incident.”
