The film, out Friday, follows the true story of a series of murders in the 1920s against members of the Osage Nation after oil was discovered on their land in Oklahoma.

“As an Osage, I really wanted this to be from Mollie’s perspective and what her family experienced, but I think it takes an Osage to do that,” he said, referring to the character in the film played by Lily Gladstone. he continued.

He also noted that he thinks Scorsese “did a great job of representing people,” but that the film “wasn’t made for an Osage audience.”

Another Osage language consultant, Janis Carpenter, was on the premiere carpet Monday night and said she too had “mixed feelings” about the film.

The murders, which later became known as the Reign of Terror, were not properly investigated by law enforcement at the time.

Ultimately, Osage Nation members were forced to lobby the federal government to investigate the series of murders.

The federal agency that was the precursor to the FBI investigated the murders and investigators concluded that Ernest and Hale were likely involved.
