Killers of the Flower Moon gets its first negative review: Martin Scorsese film slammed by Osage film consultant who criticizes it being told from perspective of Leonardo DiCaprio’s ‘abusive’ character

Martin Scorsese’s latest film project, the highly anticipated “Killers of the Flower Moon,” has received its first critical comments from some of the Osage tribe film consultants who worked on the film.

The film, out October 20, follows the true story of a series of murders in the 1920s against members of the Osage Nation after oil was discovered on their land in Oklahoma.

Christopher Cote, an Osage language consultant for the film, made honest comments Monday night at the film’s LA premiere, saying he was “nervous about the film’s release,” and not that he has seen the film, he has ” some strong opinions’. .’

The history of the murders, he said, ‘is almost told from the perspective of Ernest Burkhart (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) and they give him some kind of conscience and show that there is love.

“But if someone conspires to kill your entire family, that’s not love. That’s not love, that just goes beyond abuse.’

“As an Osage, I really wanted this to be from Mollie’s perspective and what her family experienced, but I think it takes an Osage to do that,” he said, referring to the character in the film played by Lily Gladstone. he continued.

He also noted that he thinks Scorsese “did a great job of representing people,” but that the film “wasn’t made for an Osage audience.”

Another Osage language consultant, Janis Carpenter, was on the premiere carpet Monday night and said she too had “mixed feelings” about the film.

“Some of it was so interesting to see, and we have so many of our tribal people in the film, it’s great to see them. But there are also some things that were quite difficult to accept,” she said.

The film follows DiCaprio’s Burkhart, who becomes responsible for murdering several of his Native American wife’s relatives as part of a plot to inherit their lucrative oil rights in Oklahoma.

The film also stars Lily Gladstone, who plays Mollie Burkhart, and Robert De Niro as William Hale, the leader of the plot to kill Mollie’s family.

The murders, which later became known as the Reign of Terror, were not properly investigated by law enforcement at the time.

Ultimately, Osage Nation members were forced to lobby the federal government to investigate the series of murders.

The federal agency that was the precursor to the FBI investigated the murders and investigators concluded that Ernest and Hale were likely involved.

Years later, Mollie stood by her husband, causing her Osage family and friends to disown her.

In 1926, Burkhart admitted his role in the murders and testified against Hale and other conspirators. At that time, Mollie divorced him, but her community refused to take her back.
