Just days after the arrest of his controversial citizen outside the Grammy Awards, Killer Mike opens up for his first in-depth interview since the altercation.
The 48-year-old rapper (born Michael Render) was led away in handcuffs after an altercation with what he called an “overzealous security guard” at Crypto.com Arena.
The arrest came after he conquered the rap category, winning best rap album, best rap performance and best rap song.
He opened up GQ and revealed that he had a “long talk with God” after the altercation, although he was grateful because his son found a kidney donor the next day.
“I could have succumbed to anger or malice and talked nonsense. But I’m just grateful. I talked about this album being a return to the religious and moral principles I grew up with,” he began.

“And I just have to say, man, you’re going to be in a position where it’s just you and God,” he added.
“And it took me a few hours, man. “I was just alone, and I was just grateful that I took the time to thank God and say, I appreciate the blessings that you’ve given me,” he continued.
“I spent time talking. I call on the spirit of my grandmother and my mother and just say, “Look, I did it.” And after a few hours, man, I got out and started partying and having fun,” he admitted.
He added that he was “glad that I used those three hours to be grateful to God, to be calm and to meditate. Because the next morning I got a call that my child, after being on the list for three years, finally got his kidney.’
The rapper’s son – Michael “Pony Boy” Render – underwent surgery and a successful kidney transplant on Monday after waiting three years for a match.
‘And I can just really tell you that God really exists. And in the same way that Christ gave us an example of being alone, of being tempted by Satan, I understand that much better now, because I could have succumbed to anger or evil and talked nonsense,” he said of his arrest.
“But I’m just grateful. I am grateful. Not only that I won, but I am grateful that within 24 hours God showed me that there is something more important than even the awards you worked for. And that’s my family and my child and I’m just grateful. I thank Him,” he said.
When asked what his Grammys success symbolizes for rap culture right now, he said, “I know when Kendrick wins, people are like, ‘Oh, damn, they got it right.’ I know that when others have won, they say, “They didn’t do well.” Damn it they got it right this time. They honored the culture.”

He added, “In hip-hop’s 50th year, there isn’t an album more worthy of winning than this. This has all the elements. It has braggadocio, it has knowledge, it has great stories and stories. It’s got smooth beats, it’s got cuts and scratches’

‘You can groove to it, you can dance to it. It’s educational, not just entertaining. It gives love and praise to black women everywhere. It celebrates what the working class have done in this country in the most artistic way. There was no better record. This time they got it right. Absolutely right,” he said.
He also clarified that before his rap sweep on Sunday night, he had already won a Grammy.
“I want people to understand that I was a Grammy winner before I won (Sunday). I won for Outkast’s The Whole World, an absolutely amazing verse, which I knocked hard as a rookie.”
