Killer husband forced to listen to searing courtroom rant by stricken mother-in-law

A murderous husband was forced to listen to his mother-in-law’s searing testimony in court after being sentenced to life for her daughter’s murder.

Spencer Moen, 32, was sentenced to life in prison on Monday for the August 2023 death of his wife, Sonja Moen, 30.

Many of her family members took the stand to give victim impact statements, including her mother, Kristin Scofield, who said she would not be able to forgive Moen for the “lifelong trauma” he caused them.

“I will continue to pray for forgiveness, but right now it is not in my soul. I’m sorry,” she told him. “I can’t seem to get out of that room. You knocked the life out of my daughter. And to make matters worse, you did it in front of the kids.

‘You can’t blame her anymore. Everyone saw through that excuse. It all depends on you,” she continued Infoforum.

“You will miss every important and insignificant event in their eyes, all because you were not in control of yourself. You stole [your children’s] opportunity to grow up with a mother full of unconditional love.’

Moen was seen wiping away tears as the family spoke.

The father was convicted of beating his wife to death. After calling 911, he originally told police that her bruises were from the face plant she had planted on the stairs the night before. Law & Crime.

She was found unconscious in the bathtub with defensive wounds. Moen claimed that his wife had “slept there because she said she was going to take a bath or a shower” and had thrown up the night before.

Police found blood on the bedroom floor, as well as on the left side and foot of the bed leading to the bathroom, the outlet reported.

The night before, the couple was seen at a supermarket picking up sandwiches and cigarettes after Sonja picked her husband up from golf before arriving home around 10pm.

Moen said his wife had tripped up the stairs that night and explained the bruises on her face.

After putting the children to bed, the couple got into another argument while smoking in the garage, Moen said. He claimed that Sonja punched him in the back of the head, but police found no evidence of injury there.

The couple then got into a physical altercation in their bedroom, where the husband claimed Sonja jumped on him, causing them to roll off the side of the bed. He said she punched him and he pushed her away by the neck.

According to Law & Crime, he later admitted to police that he punched his wife in the face at least three or four times.

One of the children witnessed the bedroom fight, investigators said.

Sonja then told her husband that she was going to take a shower, but he did not hear the water running. When he returned from a second smoke break, he found his wife motionless in the bathtub.

“Spencer states he dumped water on her head to get her attention so she would return to the bedroom to go to sleep,” the affidavit said. ‘Sonja didn’t answer and stayed in the bath.’

The next morning he found his wife still unresponsive in the bathtub and her body cold. He took his children to daycare two hours earlier than usual before trying to wake her up again, he claimed. Then he called 911.

Video footage obtained from Moen’s phone showed his wife lying in the bathtub.

“It appears that Sonja was having extreme difficulty breathing and was in an abnormal sleeping position,” the statement said. “Sonja also exhibited a sound similar to snoring…Based on my training and experience, the sound Sonja makes appears to be consistent with agonal breathing.”

Agonal breathing occurs when a person cannot get enough air and is associated with a medical emergency.

Moen did not help his wife as she struggled.
