Kilkivan: Man shot by police after allegedly charging at cop with a knife after another man is stabbed to death

A man has been shot by police after allegedly attacking an officer with a knife shortly before the body of another man was found.

A police officer was called to a house in Kilkivan, 50km west of Gympie in Queensland, about 3pm after reports of a fight between two men.

When they arrived, a 42-year-old man allegedly stormed out of the building with a knife.

The police officer shot the man, who has since been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Another man, 55, was subsequently found dead in the house, apparently from stab wounds.

The relationship between the two men is unclear.

“The police officer attempted to negotiate with the offender for a short period and retreated behind his police vehicle and then across the road from the incident address,” Acting Chief Inspector Paul Algie said.

“As a result of this interaction between the police officer and the male subject, the police officer fired one shot from his service firearm, striking the male perpetrator and causing him to fall to the ground.”

The officer administered first aid to the man before he was taken to Sunshine Coast Hospital in a critical condition.

The police officer was not injured.

Ethical Standards Command will investigate the shooting.
