Kiernan Shipka, 23, reveals working on Mad Men as a child actor was ‘really intense’

Kiernan Shipka admitted it was “really intense” being a child actor on the hit AMC drama series Mad Men, according to an article published by Page six on Saturday.

The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina actress, 23, who recently put on a breathtaking show at the premiere of White House Plumbers, most notably played the role of Sally Draper for seven seasons on the award-winning show.

The star was cast to play the character of Sally, the oldest daughter of Jon Hamm (Don Draper) and January Jones (Betty Draper), when she was just seven years old.

During the special screening of the upcoming HBO project, White House Plumbers, earlier this week on Monday, Kiernan reminisced about her former role on Page Six, saying, “I’m surprised because I didn’t really think it was hard work at the time.’

Since she joined the series at such a young age, the actress explained, “I didn’t know anything else. That’s what I did. But when I look back on it, I think, “Yeah, well, that was really intense.”

The Riverdale actress played the role of Sally since the show’s first season in 2007 until its conclusion in 2015.

Kiernan also expressed her gratitude for being given the opportunity to appear on Mad Men for the entire duration of the drama, telling the outlet, “I was really lucky as a kid. Just to trust the performance and not really doubt it.’

“And I, in turn, think I just didn’t really doubt myself and I found my abilities in ways that maybe I wouldn’t if they were suppressed or if people tried to shape or shift them in some way” , the Flowers In The Attic star explained.

“They let me play on that set and I’m so thankful for that.” Along with Jon Hamm and January Jones, Shipka has collaborated with other stars on the AMC series such as Vincent Kartheiser, Elisabeth Moss, Christina Hendricks and also John Slattery.

Upon its release, Mad Men received critical acclaim and in total it garnered a total of 16 Emmys as well as five Golden Globes.

In April last year, Kiernan hinted at that Entertainment tonight that she would be willing to re-enter the world of Mad Men and reprise her role of Sally.

In the show, her character played a pivotal role in response to her parents’ divorce and later her mother’s cancer diagnosis.

“I’m not done with Sally yet,” the actress revealed. “I don’t think she would be in New York. I think she would do LA… But I’m not done with her at all.’

Since the show ended, Kiernan has also maintained a close relationship with her co-stars.

At an Oscars party last year in 2022, she had crossed paths with Hamm and told Entertainment Tonight, “I always enjoy seeing him.”

During the festivities, the actress recalled having “a drink in my hand” and explained that it was “a weird thing we had to work through.” But we are on the other side. We’re talking like adults now. It is awesome.’

While passing by Watch what’s happening live with Andy Cohen earlier last year, she also revealed that the Top Gun: Maverick actor was very “protective” of her on the set of Mad Men.

“He’d say, ‘Kid on deck’ if I was around, that way everyone would interrupt the profanity,” she humorously added.

Though she departed from the AMC series eight years ago, Shipka has kept busy, having appeared in other shows such as Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina, Riverdale, and Feud: Bette And Joan.
