Kieran Reilly clinches BMX Freestyle Olympic silver with thrilling second run- as the cyclist adds Team GB’s fifth medal of the day in Paris
Britain’s Kieran Reilly won silver for Great Britain in the men’s BMX Freestyle final at the Paris Olympics with a thrilling second run.
The reigning world champion was the last to take part in the final, after coming out on top in the qualifying round on Tuesday at the Place de la Concorde.
Reilly was already assured of bronze before his final race, as the Briton had dropped down the rankings after a great performance from Frenchman Anthony Jeanjean.
The home favorite had to abort his first run, but made a spectacular second single to move past Reilly to second base.
Reilly put in his second impressive run of the competition, looking to dethrone Argentine Jose Torres Gil from the top spot in the standings.
The 23-year-old Newcastle player dropped to his knees as his final score was announced: 93.91, which was short of the 94.82 needed to beat Torres Gil.
However, his score was enough to move Reilly back ahead of Jeanjean and secure the silver medal.
The silver medal continued Britain’s success in BMX Freestyle, a discipline first introduced at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020.
Declan Brooks won bronze at the same event in the Japanese capital, the same day that Charlotte Worthington won gold.
Torres Gil’s victory marked the first time that Argentina has won gold in an individual cycling event at the Olympic Games.
The 29-year-old’s victory ended Argentina’s wait for the Olympic title after the country failed to win gold in Tokyo.
