Here’s why we decided to have an $80,000 KFC themed wedding – and no it wasn’t ‘bogan’

A young couple have revealed why they decided to treat their friends and family to a luxurious KFC-themed wedding celebration after tying the knot in Sydney.

Thanh Huynh, 29, and Brian Tran, 28, met in their college library and slowly fell in love during long Tuesday study sessions that usually ended with a trip to KFC for some hot and spicy chicken.

Speaking to FEMAIL, the loved-up couple revealed that the takeaway remained a staple into their twenties, with Brian stopping in every country to try something from the restaurant as they traveled around Europe.

So when the opportunity arose eight years later to make their love official with the Colonel’s help, they knew they had to take it.

The couple took part in the ‘onion ring engagement’ competition, with Brian Thanh proposing on camera.

“We sat down and wrote a script together. I was the secret herbs and spices and he was the colonel. It also kind of fit with our love story,” she said.

They were halfway through planning the wedding, but figured they had nothing to lose by going in.

“Our invitations and everything had gone out – we knew we would do well if we won.” Thanh said.

“But we couldn’t believe it when we actually got the call to say we had won.”

They were officially engaged months earlier, with Brian getting down on one knee during the famous Coogee to Bondi walk.

“He knows I like to walk, so that’s where he did it. I didn’t know it was coming,” Thanh said.

She said her mother had insisted they get married for years and was just as excited about their engagement.

The couple’s big day always included an intimate ceremony at the Sydney Opera House, followed by some time on the Bennelong Lawn and a reception at Cabra-Vale Diggers.

But winning the competition meant that every part of the big day was infused with elements of KFC.

During the stopover on the lawn there was a themed picnic, which was a huge highlight for Brian.

The reception featured a KFC bucket-themed wedding cake, personalized buckets for guests, chicken suits galore and a grazing table loaded with menu items.

“It was quite amazing to see guests trying to catch the KFC merchandise with their buckets as Thanh threw it into the crowd,” said Brian.

The couple was able to invite close work friends after winning the competition because the $80,000 budget was more generous than their own.

“They gave us some suggestions and we could choose what we wanted, so it was still our day, but with a touch of KFC,” Thanh said.
