KFC ramps up publicity for $5 meal deal amid fast-food value wars – only to be hit with litany of customer complaints

KFC has joined the war on fast food meals, and its attempt to crush the competition has seemingly backfired.

The restaurant chain released a video ad on TikTok this month promoting its Taste of KFC deals, which start at $4.99.

The less than 20-second video ad showed viewers how to quickly grab a $4.99 KFC Meal for One, which comes with a drumstick, a thigh, mashed potatoes with gravy and a biscuit.

The $4.99 Meal for One is one of three meals included in the Taste of KFC Deals, which became available in restaurants last April.

Although the video ad was used to generate good publicity, it instead received negative comments from TikTokers who criticized KFC and its meal.

‘5.00$? That’s for two small chickens, a cookie and a scoop of mashed potatoes. Not worth it,” one TikToker wrote on the June 7 video.

More than one commenter even criticized the meal packaging, with some wondering why the packer didn’t include coleslaw in the box.

“You forgot the paper/wax paper at the bottom of the box,” wrote a TikToker claiming to be a former KFC employee.

Some users called for the restaurant chain to bring back menu items like potato wedges, while others trashed KFC in general, claiming to remember the deal being $1.99 in the past.

‘KFC is rubbish now. Every time I get it the chicken is hard and dry and looks old. Potatoes and gravy are good,” one TikToker wrote.

KFC is the second largest restaurant chain in the world, the first being McDonald’s.

Today, participating McDonald’s restaurants nationwide began offering a limited-time $5 meal.

The $5 meal allows a customer to choose between a McDouble and a McChicken and comes with a four-piece Chicken McNuggets, small fries and a small soda.

“We are committed to winning the war of values,” said Joe Erlinger, president of McDonald’s USA, in an interview with Bloomberg News.

Customers in states like New York, California and Hawaii may be disappointed because McDonald’s restaurants in those states are charging them $6 instead of $5.

However, the return of McDonald’s app-only “Free Fries Friday,” which gives customers a free medium fry with a minimum purchase of $1, could make up for this, as it will be offered at participating restaurants for the rest of the year.

KFC and McDonald’s are joined by Burger King, which is also offering its own $5 meal.

Burger King confirmed in May that it would be re-releasing its $5 value meal, called the $5 Your Way Meal.

The meal, which has been available to Burger King customers since June 13, comes with a choice of Whopper Jr., Bacon Cheeseburger and Chicken Jr, fries, a four-piece chicken nuggets and soft drink.

Wendy’s $3 breakfast is also doing well since it became available at select locations in May.

The deal includes an English muffin with bacon, egg and cheese or sausage, egg and cheese, and a small portion of seasoned potatoes.
