An Australian Tesla owner has shared footage of an elderly man wrecking his electric car and has asked the public for help in tracking down the man so he can pay for the repairs.

David Shannon shared the video online after the brazen vandal vandalised his pride and joy at a Woolworths in Queanbeyan, near Canberra on the New South Wales border, on Thursday.

The footage showed the man scratching the car as he walked past it, before stopping on the sidewalk to inspect his handiwork

“Does anyone know this guy? He scratched my car at Woolworths,” Shannon captioned the footage on a community Facebook page.

Some viewers were quick to assume he was in a handicapped parking spot, but Mr. Shannon promptly denied that theory.

“To clarify, I am not in a handicapped park. The handicapped parks are to the right, as indicated by the arrow on the sign,” he added.

“This is not a cheap solution and I would like to ask him politely what prompted him to do this.”

Mr Shannon told Daily Mail Australia the man has not yet been identified, leaving him to pay around $3,000 in paint repairs.

He had only one possible explanation for the man who scratched his car: that he had a problem with electric cars.

Many viewers encouraged Mr Shannon to share the footage with police.

“This footage needs to be taken to the police and he needs to be held accountable and made to pay for the damage to the car,” one person wrote.

Another added: ‘Take it to the police, they should be able to find this man.’

A third wrote: ‘I wonder what his problem is? Why is he deliberately damaging cars like this? I hope he is held accountable and prosecuted.’

Daily Mail Australia has contacted New South Wales police for comment.

The case arose after Brisbane couple Raymond and Barbara Edwards were charged with wilfully causing damage and fined after they were caught on camera tinkering with cars including a Tesla at Brookside Shopping Centre in October last year.

Earlier this year, they admitted to Daily Mail Australia that they had become frustrated after being “cut off” by a white Tesla and a white BMW and nearly pushed into an electricity pylon half a mile from the shops.

“I regret our actions, but the point is that civility has been thrown out the window and stupidity has been added,” Mr Edwards said.

Mr Edwards was ordered to pay $2,443.61 in damages for the damage to the Tesla and the BMW, while Mrs Edwards was ordered to pay the remaining $897.25 for repair work on the Tesla.
