Former President Kevin McCarthy lashed out at his foreign policy at a press conference where he tore into President Biden’s response to the attacks on Israel and insisted that the spending bill he introduced in the House that led to his impeachment was the right decision.

He said the US intelligence community had “failed” when Hamas caught Israel by surprise during a long-planned barrage of rocket attacks over the weekend.

“This was not just a failure in Israel, in its intelligence community. It was ours too,” he said.

He scored a victory lap for his controversial continuing resolution (CR), the spending deal that passed with a majority of Democratic votes in the House and averted a last-second government shutdown.

The press conference was ostensibly a way for McCarthy to position himself as the best man to lead the lower house through an attack on one of the US’s top allies.

The former speaker’s message to Biden was: “Turn off the barbecue and talk to the American people.”

“Be the leader the world is looking for.”

Biden has no public appearances on his schedule for Monday and hosted a White House barbecue on Sunday.

McCarthy declined to say what his answer would be if reappointed to the position, instead insisting it was “a matter of conference.”

Gaetz and Mays were among eight Republicans and all Democrats who voted to remove McCarthy from the speech last week. Gaetz’s complaints were with CR.

McCarthy accused those who voted to oust him for doing so out of caution, insisting that the rules must be changed so that a member cannot bring a motion to vacate or a motion to fire the speaker on the floor of the House.

“This congress has to understand that … if it allows a few people who love a camera more than the American public” to oust the speaker, “then we’re not going to govern,” he said. .

McCarthy described his deep commitment to Israel while laying out what he envisioned the US response to the conflict should be in a “five-point plan.”

Iran has denied any involvement in the attack, but the sophisticated tactics used by Hamas suggest otherwise. The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday that Iranian security officials helped Hamas plan the attack.

He said Biden should then demand the extradition of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, and the US “must be there for our friend Israel” by passing legislation to help it replace its Iron Dome, its anti-missile defense defense system, including defense assistance. .
