House Speaker Kevin McCarthy BLOCKS ‘Squad’ Member Rashida Tlaib From Holding An Anti-Israel Event At The Capitol

  • Tlaib has come under fire for sharing anti-Semitic tropes and has called for ‘Nakba’, referring to Israel’s creation as a ‘catastrophe’

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy blocked an anti-Israel event planned at the Capitol by pro-Palestinian “Squad” member Rep. Rashida Tlaib.

Tlaib, the first member of Congress of Palestinian descent, came under fire earlier this week for helping to organize an event to mark the “catastrophe” of the founding of the Jewish state of Israel 75 years ago.

The progressive member wrote in a tweet that “75 years later, the Nakba continues to this day.”

Nakba refers to the establishment of a Jewish-majority state in what was once Palestine. It claims the act was a form of “ethnic cleansing.”

The event, originally scheduled for Wednesday, is said to have “educated” Congress and “elevated the experiences of Palestinians who have undergone the Nakba.”

However, the pro-Israel House speaker closed it the day before it was due to take place.

“This event at the Capitol is off,” McCarthy tweeted Tuesday night, referring to Tlaib’s planned event.

“Instead, I will host a bipartisan discussion in honor of the 75th anniversary of the US-Israel relationship.”

Not to be deterred, Tlaib told CNN on Wednesday that the event will be held in the Senate instead.

“We have it on the Senate side. It’s on campus, it’s on Capitol Hill,” she reportedly said.

McCarthy just returned from a congressional delegation trip to Israel, where he reaffirmed the United States’ determination to support the state and addressed Israel’s parliament, the Knesset.

He also criticized President Joe Biden for not inviting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House.

Biden has made his opposition clear, saying he had no immediate plans to offer the Israeli leader a visit to the White House.

His ambassador later diluted that by saying the government would invite Netanyahu “soon.”

Tlaib came under fire from Republicans before the event, including Republican National Committee (RNC) Chair Ronna McDaniel.

“Rashida Tlaib, who has repeatedly used anti-Semitic tropes, is organizing an event to attack Israel with groups advocating terrorism and supporting the anti-Semitic BDS movement,” McDaniel tweeted Monday night.
