Kevin Costner’s $100M Horizon movie set for disappointing $12M opening after Yellowstone star put $40M of his OWN money into the project
Expectations aren’t high for the box office potential of part one of Kevin Costner’s expensive Western epic, Horizon: An American Saga.
The first installment of the series, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter One, is currently expected to gross around $12 million after it debuts at the domestic box office on June 28, according to tracking numbers calculated by a major service, The Hollywood Reporter reports.
The four-part series had a budget of $100 million and Costner contributed $38 million of his own money to the project, according to the outlet.
However, sources claim that the 69-year-old Costner doesn’t think the tracking numbers include his own fan base, with a large portion of his viewers in the central US, and the outlet also noted that the tracking numbers haven’t been accurate lately.
THR also reports that the prequel, A Quiet Place: Day One, is expected to gross $40 million at the box office when it debuts on June 28.

It comes after Costner revealed he ignored calls to turn the Horizon films into a TV series because he cherishes the big screen experience.
Horizon Chapter 1 will be released in the United States on June 28, 2024, while Chapter 2 will be released on August 16, 2024, but the first part is dismissed by critics.
Yellowstone star Costner, who contributed about $38 million of his own money to finance the film, told Empire he took a gamble by releasing the saga in theaters.
He said: ‘I had someone say, ‘Look, please don’t do this, Kevin, let’s do this.’
‘But I’m happy with what I do. I believe in the big screen. I believe in that experience. I also believe in what comes on your television. You know, I’m not one of those guys with a director’s cut. The damn movie I’m making is the director’s cut.’
The Dances with Wolves star – who is worth an estimated $250 million – said: ‘I’m not crazy, but I’m not scared.
‘I will own this film for the rest of my life. My family will too. And films are much more than their opening weekend. They are valuable throughout their lives and I will own this film for the rest of my life.
“And people will find it. And when they do, whether it’s opening weekend or not, they’ll discover a quality. They’ll find a story they want to revisit or share with someone. And for me that is the power of a film.’
“My hope is that I get this money back, but you know what, I’m not going to fall apart if it (doesn’t happen).

“I’ll lose some things that I found valuable, but they’re just things that I kept. I must add: I never want to do this again. But I don’t live my life in fear.’
Filming of Chapter 3 of the film saga began in May 2024. Chapter 4 is in development.
Horizon received a 10-minute standing ovation from the audience after its premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival last month.
In addition to Costner, it has a star-studded ensemble cast, with Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Giovanni Ribisi, Ella Hunt, Danny Huston and Luke Wilson also sharing the screen.

Costner last month launched a terrifying new poster for his $100 million gambling film series Horizon: An American Saga – just days after criticizing Yellowstone producers during his departure from the show
However, the film has received some scathing reviews and a very low score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a score of just 38 percent on the Tomatometer – the rating system used on the film criticism website.
Costner financed the film himself and admitted that he had put $38 million of his own money into the project after trying for decades to find a studio to make the film.
He even took out a loan on his Santa Barbara home after trying unsuccessfully to save it for more than 30 years.
Despite the drama, Costner hasn’t closed the door on his return to Yellowstone; still from Yellowstone
Costner previously revealed in June 2022 that he planned to make a total of four Horizon films, shot back-to-back.
It is the fourth time that Costner has directed a film in his long career, which also includes the following films Dances With Wolves (1990), The Postman (1990) and Open Range (2003).
Costner has achieved enormous success with his work, including his directorial debut Dances with Wolves (1990), which won seven Academy Awards from twelve nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.
