Beau Is Afraid is the third feature film written and directed by Ari Aster, following his 2018 feature film debut Hereditary and 2019’s Midsommar.

The film follows Phoenix’s title character Beau Wassermann, whose life is turned upside down after the sudden death of his mother (Patti LuPone).

Beau, described as a “gentle but fear-ridden man,” must face his deepest fears as “he embarks on an epic, Kafkaesque odyssey back home.”

Aster had been developing the feature film for years, with one of his shorts, 2011’s Beau, inspiring a sequence in the feature film.

The filmmaker described the project as a “nightmare comedy” and a “Jewish Lord of the Rings, but he just goes to his mother’s house.”

The film cost $35 million and would be indie distributor A24’s most expensive film to date.

Zoe Lister-Jones opted for a strapless pink mini dress with red platform heels for the outing.

The actress plays the younger version of Beau’s mother in the highly anticipated movie from A24 Films.

Beau Is Afraid will be released in the US on April 21 and will hit UK cinemas on May 19.
