Kelly Rowland says oft-mocked Excel text message from Nelly’s Dilemma video made her look ‘nuts’: ‘Do you know how much flack I get from that?’
Kelly Rowland is hitting back after years of being mocked for a technologically illiterate one-second clip from her and Nelly’s Dilemma music video.
During a recent appearance on The last meals of the mythical kitchen interview series, Kelly — who remained mum about her recent locker room fiasco on the Today Show — spoke about a portion of the video in which she appeared to be typing a text message on a 2002 cell phone that resembled Microsoft Excel.
The clip has been widely mocked and memed, with Kelly – who at 43 looking barely a day older than in the music video – complained to Josh Scherer that she looked “crazy.”
After more than two decades of fans making fun of her, she came up with a possible explanation for the mistake – it was a ‘draft’ – while Scherer stunned her when he told her there might be a way to get the text message back. message to send. through Excel.
“Do you know how much bullshit that gives me?” Kelly said after Scherer jokingly introduced her as the “only person in history to successfully send a text message through Microsoft Excel.”

Fans joke about part of video where she tries to type a text message in Microsoft Excel – then wonders why she never got a response
However, she said she was “used to it now.”
The Destiny’s Child singer made it clear that no one pointed out the problem with the text message in the spreadsheet app.
“And I’m actually mad at them because they didn’t, because they made me look crazy,” she continued.
Scherer noted that she “seemed so angry” that Nelly’s character had not replied to her message in the video.
“What did you expect ’cause it’s just a sketch, honey,” Kelly said jokingly as she addressed her video personality.
But fans have had twenty years to come up with a solution that would have made Kelly look a little less foolish, which Scherer called her out on.
“It turns out there is actually a way to put a hyperlink to an email under an Excel spreadsheet,” he explained, as she looked shocked and confused. “So now you can tell people that’s exactly what you were doing, but they just didn’t know the technology at the time.”
Kelly looked into the camera and shrugged as she gestured toward the interview.
“What he said,” she joked, causing a big laugh from the crew on set.
The years-long jokes may have been particularly annoying to Kelly, because the close-up of the camera screen was an insert that may have been filmed later, possibly with someone else’s hands in the frame, and it’s not even clear if the spreadsheet on the phone screen was originally there or if it was added in post-production, meaning Kelly might not even have had a chance to correct the mistake if she had noticed it.
