Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos discuss their marriage of nearly 27 years on their new podcast Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa.
The podcast debuts on Wednesday, with MY! Debuting a preview where Ripa, 52, told Consuelos, 51, that her husband was “insanely jealous” at the beginning of her message.
The couple, who hit the Oscars red carpet earlier this month, met in 1995 when Consuelos joined the cast of All My Children, and eloped in May 1996.
“My biggest complaint about you over the course of our marriage, and this isn’t recent because it definitely changed and I don’t know if you changed or I changed or if it was a combination of changes, but you used to be insanely jealous.” and that was a hard pill to swallow,” Ripa began.
“It’s very difficult to be married to someone who is jealous and you were jealous of things that weren’t… you had a perception of a scenario,” she said, offering the “best example” from very early on in their marriage.
Opening: Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos open up about their marriage of nearly 27 years on their new podcast Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa
Early days: The couple, who hit the Oscars red carpet earlier this month, met in 1995 when Consuelos joined the cast of All My Children (seen above in July 1996), and eloped in May nineteen ninety six.
‘It was our first week of marriage, because we didn’t go on our honeymoon until later. You were working and I went to visit you in Boston,” Ripa recalls.
“We went to this Italian restaurant and the waiter was like a really cute old man, he’s definitely 70 if not 80.” He leaned in and said: ‘And for the principessa?'”
Consuelos admitted that she “got upset” at the time, with Ripa adding: “I thought it was so cute that this little old man called me princess, and I looked at him and gave my order in a very smiley way.”
“And he walked away and you made a horrible fight,” he said, as Consuelos admitted that he remembered that.
‘I remember that. Look at 25 years old, he was pretty crazy. But that jealousy thing definitely followed me for a while, but I’m not jealous anymore,” he added.
Ripa tells her husband that she’s “so thankful you’re not,” adding that she doesn’t “pray for things or people… I’d just say, ‘Please let him lose this character flaw.’
Consuelos admitted that it wasn’t even a ‘personality flow’, it was a ‘character flaw’.
It’s ugly. As ugly as it feels for the person who has to be on the receiving end, it’s such an ugly feeling inside,” he admitted.
Honeymoon: ‘It was our first week of marriage, because we didn’t take our honeymoon until later. You were working and I went to visit you in Boston,” Ripa recalls.
Princess: “We went to an Italian restaurant and the waiter was like a really cute old man, he’s definitely 70, if not 80.” She leaned in and said: ‘And for the principessa?’
Mark remembers: ‘I remember that. Look at 25 years old, he was pretty crazy. But that jealousy thing definitely followed me for a while, but I’m not jealous anymore,” he added.
If this is any consolation, you know you’re going crazy. The jealous one knows that this is wrong and ugly, but he cannot help it, ”added the actor.
Ripa asked: ‘What changed?’ that helped him put aside his jealousy, Consuelos admitted that he could not specify it.
‘I don’t know. I think I wanted to work on myself a little bit and that was one of the biggest things I needed to work on because it got in the way,” Consuelos said.
The new podcast, produced by SiriusXM and Milojo Productions, premieres Wednesday, March 22 on Stitcher, the SXM app, or wherever podcasts are available.
Other guests this season include Anderson Cooper, Carol Burnett, Edie Falco, Holly Robinson Peete, Joel McHale, Matthew McConaughey, Nia Long, and more.
The news comes on the heels of Ripa’s longtime Live With Kelly & Ryan co-host Ryan Seacrest leaving the show.
His own husband, Consuelos, will replace him, and their new episodes together will begin on April 17.
‘I am very excited. It is an honor. It’s such an iconic show. That seat next to my wife is a very precious seat. I consider her the best in the business, so I’m very excited,” said Consuelos.
Comfort: ‘If this is any consolation, you know you’re going crazy. The jealous one knows this is wrong and ugly, but he can’t help it,’ the actor added.
Changed: Ripa asked: ‘What changed?’ that helped him put aside his jealousy, Consuelos admitted that she could not identify him
