Kelly Clarkson says her two kids have been candid about their sadness over family divorce
Kelly Clarkson says her two young children have been open with her in explaining their complicated feelings in the wake of her 2020 divorce from their father, Brandon Blackstock.
The 40-year-old man, who appears in Angie Martinez’s real life podcast On Monday, she opened up about the fallout from her split from her ex Blackstock, 46, with whom she shares a daughter, River Rose, eight, and a son, Remington Alexander, six.
Clarkson filed for divorce from Blackstock after a seven-year marriage in June 2020, citing irreconcilable differences, with the separation finalized a year ago.
The Fort Worth, Texas-born star said communication is key to her parenting style: “I literally ask my kids every night when we’re cuddled up, ‘Are you happy? And if you’re not, what could I do to you? happier? “‘
Clarkson said that “sometimes they’ll say, especially in the last two years, and it kills me and I want them to be honest, so I never say, ‘Oh, God, don’t tell me that,’ but a lot of times it would be like, ‘You know, I’m very sad. I wish mom and dad were in the same house.”

The “A Moment Like This” singer said her kids are “very honest about it,” another trait she’s instilling in them.
“I’m raising that kind of person, I want you to be honest with me,” Clarkson said.
The My Life Would Suck Without You artist says she tries to relate to his perspective, as she too is “from a divorced family.”
She said: “I sit there and go, ‘I get it… I get it, that sucks, but we’re going to work it out. And we both love you so much.'”
The Miss Independent frontwoman said she seeks to find a middle ground when it comes to tone and tenor in her conversations about difficult topics with her children.
“I think communicating with them and not treating them, not treating them like adults, because they’re not, but not treating them like children,” he said. “They are not small feelings, they are huge feelings and huge emotions.”
Clarkson said her kids will ask her if she loves Blackstock, and she says, “No, I don’t know if that goes away.”
Clarkson said that with life experience behind her, she “won’t be remarrying” in the future.
Clarkson was photographed with her eight-year-old daughter River Rose and six-year-old son Remington Alexander last year at Legoland New York.

Clarkson and Blackstock were photographed in Los Angeles in January 2020, five months before she filed for divorce.
“In my life, I’ve been through a couple of divorces in my own family growing up,” she said. ‘I would love to fall in love. I would love to find someone and fall in love and do that, but I have kids and that’s why I say that.
She added: ‘I didn’t have the most positive experience with passing situations and remarriage and I didn’t have the most positive situation growing up.
‘I won’t do that to my children. I would love to fall in love, but I don’t want another guy in my house with my kids.
