Kelly Clarkson praised for stopping to learn how to pronounce Twice singer’s name during interview

Kelly Clarkson has been praised for pausing an interview with girl band Twice to learn how to correctly announce a singer’s name.

The K-pop girl group is taking the world by storm, with all nine members stopping by The Kelly Clarkson this week to chat and introduce their new single Moonlight Sunrise.

And during the interview, when Kelly asked member Tzuyu about the meaning of the band’s song, she double-checked the pronunciation of her name after hearing her translator pronounce the name differently.

And upon viewing the scenes at home, fans were quick to comment and applaud Kelly for not only consulting with the performer, but also for consulting with Tzuyu herself, with one commenting that the star “knows how to respect her guest.”

While others were quick to praise the artist for making the girls “comfortable” on her show in the face of a language barrier.

In the interview, Kelly addressed each band member—Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu—by name as they chatted about everything from music, food, and their mutual beginnings in hearing programs.

At the start of the chat, Kelly warned that she might not be pronouncing their names correctly, commenting, “If I don’t, I’m sorry.” I’m a Texan!

However, in a sweet moment with Tzuyu, the only Vietnamese member of the group, the Because of You hitmaker took more time and took care to say her nickname correctly when asked about the meaning of her song.

He had initially announced his name as ‘tzoo-yoo’ before checking with the translator if he had gotten it right.

However, when the translator said it in Korean and phonetically based on the English romanization, Kelly got confused and quipped, ‘Oh, okay, wait, wait, what?’

Tzuyu’s name is pronounced ‘Jjeu-Wee’ in Korean, however her fans have romanized her English name, meaning she is known as ‘Chewy’.

And as the interpreter insisted that ‘Tzoo-yoo is good’, Kelly was eager to hear how Tzuyu herself would prefer to be addressed, asking, ‘How do you want me to say it?’

The singer then commented, ‘Jjeu-Wee,’ while Kelly quipped, ‘How do you say that’s adorable! Well then, Jjeu-Wee, I think I said it right, I’m trying.

Commenting on the clip, one appreciative fan shared, “Thank you Kelly for trying to pronounce Tzuyu’s name right and getting her to say it to get this cute scene.”

While a second shared: ‘I love that Kelly tries so hard to say their name and make them feel comfortable. And that was the closest she could get to correctly pronouncing Tzuyu in one day! She could barely pronounce it perfectly in a month, so congratulations Kelly!

“The way Kelly pronounces Tzuyu cheeky and says she’s adorable can make you feel like you know how to respect and entertain your guest even though there’s a language barrier.” We love you Kelly and Twice,’ commented a third.
