Katy Perry shocks fans as she accidentally reveals the team she’ll be cheering on at the AFL Grand Final

Katy Perry has accidentally let slip which team she will be supporting at the 2024 AFL Grand Final on Saturday.

The 39-year-old American pop singer will perform during the Brisbane Lions v Sydney Swans match at the MCG this weekend.

On Thursday, following her appearance on Channel Seven’s Sunrise programme, the Teenage Dream star made a public appearance and appeared to cheer on one of the coveted teams.

“Go for it, lions!” Perry said in a TikTok video, before suddenly stopping to speak and using random words to cover up her mistake.

“I mean, la-, mwah- swa…” she continued.

Lions fans were as surprised as they were shocked by the blunder.

“SHE’S A LIONS FAN,” one user commented.

“Katy and Lions are the winners,” wrote another.

The pre-match entertainment star insists she will have no particular preference for Brisbane over the Sydney Swans when the two teams from opposite states face off at the MCG on Saturday.

“You know, I’m Switzerland,” the artist told reporters at the MCG on Thursday.

‘What I’m still trying to process is that Melbourne has 10 teams and they’re not here!’

Perry will perform a series of her biggest hits to an audience of 100,000, including I Kissed a Girl, alongside Australian artist, reportedly Tina Arena, in one of her biggest shows since the 2015 Superbowl.

It will be her second appearance at the stadium after participating in the 2020 Women’s Cricket World Cup. She said it was a huge adrenaline rush.

“It’s been almost 10 years since I’ve done something like this in the States, and to be able to do something like this again after such a long time, it doesn’t happen very often for an artist, so I’m super excited,” she said.

The American ventured into Australian slang and AFL references during a press conference, where she frequently referred to ‘speccy’ and ‘granny’, after a run in high heels to practice handball with AFLW stars.

“She was super happy,” Swans AFLW star Chloe Molloy told AAP.

‘You would never expect to meet someone like pop icon Katy Perry.

‘That’s just the beauty of football, it brings people together.’

Local pop singer and top swimmer Cody Simpson will sing the national anthem on Saturday and he compared his nerves to those standing on the starting blocks at the pool.

“It’s a huge honour, it’s probably the ideal way to get back on stage,” he said.

Other performances will see Christine Anu join her daughter and delighted Swans fan Zipporah on stage for a special version of her most famous song My Island Home.

“It’s so great to be part of such an important event as the grand final between two of my favorite teams. So I’ve already won,” Anu said.

Up There Cazaly singer Mike Brady has confirmed he will be performing his original hit again, without any reference to the late football legend Ron Barassi. He believes this will be his 20th or 21st grand final appearance.

“I probably have a long track record,” he joked.
