  • Chantelle Cameron handed Katie Taylor the first loss of her professional career
  • It went the distance and the judges scored it 95-95, 96-94, 96-94 for Cameron
  • The decision seemed to surprise everyone at the Dublin 3Arena on Saturday night

A dark cloud hangs over Dublin after Katie Taylor suffered her first professional career defeat to Chantelle Cameron on Saturday night. The British boxer did say she would ruin Taylor’s homecoming, but very few people believed her.

Taylor’s highly anticipated fight against Cameron went the distance and the judges scored it 95-95, 96-94, 96-94 in favor of the visitor. A decision that shocked everyone at the Dublin 3Arena.

Perhaps what came before Taylor’s fight was an indication of how the night would go. Jose Felix defeated Irishman Gary Cully after the 27-year-old’s coaches had to throw in the towel.

I had hoped that wouldn’t set the tone for what was to come and everything seemed to be going so well as Taylor headed for the ring. It was a pinch-me moment that made the hairs on the back of everyone’s neck stand on end.

She looked confident, but maybe a little emotional as her fans chanted her name and the 3Arena changed to the tricolor. However, once the fight started, it was back to business.

Cameron started exceptionally well. She came flying out of the corner and seemed to get the first punch. It’s an unusual approach from Chantelle, but it seemed to work.

Cameron kept moving forward, using her power to land powerful single shots. While Taylor’s game plan focused on her speed and fast combinations. However, it was power that ultimately won this battle.

Taylor’s shots seemed to bounce off Cameron. While Cameron’s backhands and uppercuts broke through Taylor’s guard and did some real damage. Not that you would have known from the reaction of the Irish fans.

The green army cheered every shot Taylor landed and if you hadn’t judged their reaction you would have thought Taylor was about to knock out her opponent. The reality, however, was that more often than not the Bray bomber was caught flat-footed.

And so it begins, the muttering about Taylor’s future has begun. Some people say Taylor should have retired after Serrano because she will never be able to top that moment. While others argue she was right to take on the homecoming, but insist it’s time she walked away.
