Katie Taylor activates Chantelle Cameron rematch clause, Eddie Hearn confirms

Katie Taylor ACTIVATES rematch against Chantelle Cameron as undisputed lightweight champion to avenge first career loss

  • Taylor was beaten on points by Cameron on her return home to Dublin last month
  • Promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed that she has exercised her right to a rematch
  • A second clash between Taylor and Cameron is scheduled for November

Eddie Hearn has confirmed that Katie Taylor has activated her rematch clause with Chantelle Cameron after suffering the first loss of her professional career last month.

Taylor, who still reigns as the undisputed champion of the lightweight division, fell short in her bid to dethrone super-lightweight Queen Cameron in Dublin.

After 22 consecutive victories, the Irish fighting legend finally tasted defeat at the 23rd hurdle of her storied career, with Cameron instead causing a majority decision.

It turned out to be a disappointing night for Taylor on her dream comeback to Dublin, with many wondering over the past month if she should play the rematch.

On Wednesday, however, promoter Hearn confirmed that the 36-year-old is up to the challenge and has exercised her right to an immediate rematch.

A second showdown with Cameron is now scheduled for November, though the location remains unclear.

“Katie Taylor is going to apply that rematch clause against Chantelle Cameron,” Hearn revealed Matchroom’s YouTube channel. “We are probably planning that fight in November.

“It’s going to be a huge fight. Katie, there was no reason to actually get her into another fight. It’s all she wanted, the chance to match Chantelle Cameron again.

“Chantelle Cameron will come into that fight as the A-side, also as the favorite, and it’s going to be a great night.”

Prior to her first loss to Cameron, Taylor cemented a legacy as arguably the greatest female fighter of all time, reigning supreme in the lightweight division and in turn playing an integral role in women’s boxing’s recent rise.

She was victorious in her career-defining encounter with Amanda Serrano at Madison Square Garden last April, and Cameron only stepped in last month when Serrano pulled out of their scheduled rematch due to injury.

The Brit then seized her opportunity with both hands, producing a slick show in Dublin to put the first blemish on Taylor’s glittering CV.

In her previous outing, Cameron became the undisputed super lightweight champion by toppling Jessica McCaskill in Abu Dhabi and adding the WBA and WBO titles to her IBF and WBC belts.

When asked if she would be willing to face Taylor for a second time, Cameron said after last month’s win: ‘I’m happy to take the rematch and go back to Dublin. But this time there must be some changes.

“What champion accepts such a fight? I was not treated like the champion that week. I was just there to show up. But my team knew I was there to ruin the homecoming.’

She continued, “I walked out first, I stood there for a long time too. I had to keep warm and stay focused. Everything was against me.

‘I stayed focused. I’m proud of the way I handled fight week. The way I handled the opportunity. The people close to me knew I was capable and even though I won the fight there are things I learned about myself.

However, it only fueled the fire in me. I would have gotten frustrated and I could have let it get the better of me, but it was Katie Taylor’s homecoming. It was about her. But it only makes it better that I beat her. I really ruined the homecoming.’
