In an exclusive conversation with MailOnline, Aesthetics nurse at @am.esthetics, Alexandra Haq gave her expert opinion on the butterfly lip trend saying, “The technique involves vertical injections of lip filler to add height to the lips and enhance the Cupid’s bow to be defined in the same way as Russian lips.

“After the filler is injected, the lips are taped with strip tape, with the aim of preventing migration of the filler and allowing the filler to move into position, giving the lips high-definition.

“An interesting step used in some butterfly lip filler treatments is the use of Hylase (filler dissolver injections) just before re-injecting fresh lip filler.

‘After dissolving, a spatula is used to push the ‘melted’ filler into the lips and prevent the newly injected lip filler from migrating.

She cautioned, “Using Hylase and dermal filler at the same appointment and injecting filler vertically into the lips makes the butterfly lip technique a higher risk treatment.

“When Hylase has been used, you are more likely to have an uneven result, migration of fillers and severe swelling that can compress the blood vessels and compromise blood supply.

“The added use of tape containing the swelling can also create significant local pressure on the lip tissue, prolonging the recovery period and again increasing the risk of reduced blood flow.”

Speaking of Katie’s lips, who shared on her socials that she had a filler back in February, Alex Haq added: “When I look at the picture of Katie’s lips, I can say from my clinical experience that the lips are too full, which has led to a loss of the natural relationship between the size of the upper and lower lips, their shape and color.’

“The butterfly lip uses a method of injecting a lip filler that increases risk to the patient as the filler is placed in a way that puckers the skin and increases pressure on surrounding critical vessels. This is compounded by Katie getting lip filler a few months ago.’
