Kate Winslet says her daughter Mia Threapleton helped direct her as they filmed I Am Ruth
Kate Winslet has revealed that her daughter Mia Threapleton gave her acting advice while filming the family TV drama I Am Ruth.
The 47-year-old actress stars in the Channel 4 show with her real-life daughter Mia, 22, and has been promoting it ahead of its launch later this month.
Kate portrays Ruth, a concerned mother, tries to help her teenage daughter Freya (Mia) through a mental health crisis after being consumed by the pressures of social media.

Kate said that working with Mia was “extraordinary” and that she was “blown away” by her performance.
She explained that instead of giving Mia advice, her daughter was the one who directed her during filming.
Speaking to Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Kate said: “It was extraordinary, and I had days where I was like, ‘I can’t think of anything, I don’t know what to say, I don’t know what. I’m going to do.’

And I would say don’t worry, I can’t think of anything, I don’t know what to say, I don’t know what I’m going to do.
‘It just meant we held hands a lot more. He was so impressed by her. She didn’t need my help at all.
‘Sometimes he could show off a technical trick that he had picked up along the way. The little things that no one teaches you, and she appreciated those things, but when it came to acting, she would say that she got it, I’m fine.

He continued: ‘Sometimes he would say things to me like when you come in and do that, can you… and it worked fine!
“He was brilliant and we had the added advantage of knowing how to push each other, which I can say we can do quite well and he definitely brought that resource to bear considerably when we were shooting.”
It comes after Kate appeared in Lorraine on Thursday, where she said Mia didn’t need his advice and even told him to shut up.

The proud mother said that her daughter has a ‘power’ that she herself never had as a young actress while talking about the experience of working with Mia.
She explained: ‘In terms of acting, she didn’t need me at all. There are even moments where she looks at me and she’s like, ‘Shut up mom, let me do it!’
‘It was really amazing to work alongside her and to really be impressed by her courage…she is very, very powerful.
“I think this young generation of actors, I have to say, there’s a naturalism to their acting and they’re just more courageous,” he added.
“They have a voice, they speak for themselves, and they have a power that I feel like I never had.”
‘I am very, very proud of [Mia]very proud of her indeed.’
The Mare of Easttown star also admitted there was “some overlap” between her real-life role as Mia’s mother and her lead on-screen role in the drama.
Stunning: It comes after Kate appeared in Lorraine on Thursday, where she said Mia didn’t need her advice and would even tell her to shut up.
‘Naturally, there was going to be some degree of overlap. We just wanted to do something that would hopefully resonate with people,” she said.
She went on to talk about her own experiences as a mother, admitting that it can be “very difficult” to walk away and let children make their own decisions.
“It’s very, very hard to trust that they know how to take care of themselves these days and how to take care of them… just what to say,” she said.
“Sometimes you just have to let them do it and walk away, and as a parent it’s very difficult.”
I Am Ruth is an installment of the Bafta-nominated, female-directed drama anthology series I Am, created by filmmaker Dominic Savage.
The two-hour show’s fictional story, which looks at the mental health crisis affecting young people in the UK, was developed and co-written by Winslet and Savage.
