She is attending the German event for the European premiere of her biographical film Lee, in which she plays the famous war correspondent and photographer Lee Miller.

The film is directed by Ellen Kuras and also stars Marion Cotillard, Andrea Riseborough, Andy Samberg, Noémie Merlant, Josh O’Connor and Alexander Skarsgård.

It took eight years to make Lee and at one point Kate, who also produced the film, paid the salaries of the entire cast and crew for two weeks due to a lack of funding.

Her appearance at the festival comes after Kate revealed her iconic kiss scene with Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic was a “nightmare” to film.

The Mare of Easttown star describes filming the famous ‘I’m flying’ scene, in which she and Leo, 49, kiss at the front of the boat. She admits the kiss ‘wasn’t as great as it looked’.

Re-watching the scene for an interview with Vanity FairKate said that her and Leo’s makeup kept rubbing off on each other.

She said the scene was extra difficult to film because director James Cameron wanted perfect lighting, while filming took place on a part of the set that was difficult to access, meaning the hair and makeup team couldn’t be present.

Kate patted her torso and said, “I’ve been hiding here and here. I’ve got his makeup, brushes, and sponge, and my own makeup, brushes, and sponge are on the other side.”

‘In between takes I was actually just updating our makeup.’

‘We kept kissing, and I had a lot of light makeup on and I had to check our makeup — both of us, between takes — and I looked like I sucked on a caramel chocolate bar after every take, because his makeup was coming off on me.’

Leo had the same problem: Kate’s much lighter makeup kept rubbing off on his face during filming.

Still, the scene wasn’t all bad, as Kate admitted her co-star was “a real romantic.”

She said: ‘No wonder every young girl in the world wanted to be kissed by Leonardo DiCaprio. It wasn’t all it seemed.’

In another interview with VarietyKate dismissed “silly” rumours of a rift between her and James after speaking in interviews about the difficulties of filming the blockbuster.

She said, “There’s a part of me that almost feels sad that stupid, speculative Titanic stuff at the time overshadowed the actual relationship I have with him. He knows I’m open to anything. Any challenge, any bit of direction you give me? I’ll try.”

Kate and James worked together again in his 2022 film Avatar: The Way Of Water.

Titanic was the highest-grossing film of all time until the release of the first Avatar film in 2009.

The film catapulted Kate into international stardom, and she admitted she found it difficult to adjust to.

She explained: ‘I actually felt a bit defeated by it, to be honest… I had a lovely family, but all my family saw was, ‘Oh my God, Kate’s got a job in a really big movie.’

“You don’t want to say to your mom or dad, ‘It’s actually really hard.’”

Kate’s daughter Mia Threapleton has also become an actress, starring in recent films such as Firebrand and Scoop.

When asked if she was nervous about Mia’s new career in the spotlight, Kate replied: ‘Thankfully this terrible criticism, which could be damaging, has stopped.

“Once that part is gone, she can figure out the rest. She’s so emotionally robust and true to herself, I’m not worried.”
