Kate Ritchie breaks down in tears as heartbroken mum reveals how her husband died from rare cancer – leaving her to raise their two children alone: ‘How am I going to survive this?’

Kate Ritchie broke down in tears live this morning after a heartbroken young mother opened up about her husband’s death.

Speaking on Nova FM’s Fitzy & Wippa, Shannon Lewis described her struggles since her late husband Jack was diagnosed with a rare form of spinal and brain cancer.

The mother-of-two lost her children’s father Jack earlier this year and shared her desperately sad story on the breakfast show’s ‘We’ve Got Your Back’ segment.

As Shannon talked about explaining to her young children that their father wouldn’t be coming home, Kate broke down and wiped away tears.

“May I ask… how’s love going?” she asked, sobbing.

A visibly emotional Shannon replied: “Some days to even wake up… how do I get through the day?

‘How am I going to survive this? But also being a parent, and being a good one at that? And don’t let them down… that’s really hard.”

After wrapping up her heartbreaking story, co-host Ryan “Fitzy” Fitzgerald announced they would help Shannon by donating $10,000 to her family.

They will also ‘arrange Christmas’ by buying bicycles, toys and video game consoles for Shannon’s children.

It comes after Ritchie recently found herself on air when she described the toll motherhood can take.

Speaking on Nova FM’s Fitzy & Wippa, Shannon Lewis detailed her struggles since her late husband Jack was diagnosed with a rare form of spinal and brain cancer.

The former Home and Away star fought back tears last month as a guest on the breakfast program described mothers’ mental health struggles.

The 44-year-old cried as the discussion focused on how mothers can’t sleep at night because they are so worried about their children.

“Sorry, sorry,” Kate said as she cried.

Kate said she related to the way mothers got “stuck in their own heads” when trying to sleep at night.

She had also experienced “the inner part of the dialogue that never ends” when it came to raising children.

The actress is a doting mother to daughter Mae, eight, and was recently told The Sunday Telegraph her little girl gives her ‘purpose’ and ‘strength’.

“Mae gives me incredible purpose and strength and she is one of the few people who allow me to truly be myself. Nothing more or less,” she said.

‘I’m just her mother and that’s why she loves me. If I have to be completely honest, as she gets older she also teaches me that I deserve love.’
