Not long after her parents finalized their divorce two years later in 1982, Hawn began dating actor Kurt Russell, ultimately giving Kate and her older brother Oliver a father they could both rely on on a daily basis.
The two young siblings were eventually raised in Snowmass, Colorado and the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, California by her mother and Russell, along with Kurt’s son, Boston, and Kurt and Goldie’s son, Wyatt Russell.
Over the years, both Kate and Oliver have opened up about how they were estranged from their father for extended periods of time, including their more formative years as children and as adults.
In one instance in 2015, Oliver shared an unflattering comment about his father Bill on Instagram on Father’s Day.
“Happy exit day… @katehudson,” the actor wrote in a Father’s Day pun, alongside a childhood photo of himself and his sister Kate with their estranged father.
In response, Bill Hudson sounded as if he had completely disowned his son Oliver, as well as his sister Kate, in an interview with the DailyMail.
‘I had five biological children, but I now consider myself a father of three. I no longer recognize Oliver and Kate as my own. I would ask them to stop using the name Hudson,” the musician, best known for his 1970s group The Hudson Brothers, said at the time.
The Portland, Oregon, resident, 74, added, “They are no longer part of my life. Oliver’s Instagram post was a malicious, vicious, premeditated attack. To me he is dead now. Just like Kate. I mourn their loss, even though they still walk this earth.”

It appears he brought Kate into the conversation because of her Instagram post on that same Father’s Day in 2015, which showed her with stepdad Kurt.
‘Dad, simply… Thank you. Happy Father’s Day. I love you dearly. ✨ #HappyFathersDay,” she wrote in the caption, making her biological father feel disrespected.
Bill claimed his daughter’s post was “an intimate shot and as her father, I found it inappropriate and disturbing.” I’ll leave it at that.’
He went on to point the finger, accusing his ex-wife Hawn of “intentionally alienating him from their children” over the years.

“I really recognize that whatever those issues are, they are something he has to live with and they must be painful for him, and so I forgive him,” Kate shared, before admitting that the pain she may have felt was at the very least a little was tempered. bit by having Russell around as her father.
“Kurt isn’t a perfect man, like no one is, but the trust I got from him in terms of his reliability was priceless to me,” the Bride Wars star admitted.
