Kate Garraway looks in high spirits as she runs errands while holding onto her NTA gong – won just hours before

Kate Garraway looked in high spirits on Thursday as she went grocery shopping while holding the gong she won just hours earlier at the National Television Awards.

The 57-year-old GMB presenter won the Authored Documentary Award for the third time on Wednesday night for her work on Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story.

On Thursday she wore a black and white striped cardigan with baggy blue jeans and white boots.

She wore a brown leather bag cross-body and a black leather bag on her wrist. She finished her look with silver rings.

Derek’s Story follows the final months of Kate’s husband Derek Draper’s life – he died in January at the age of 56 after contracting COVID-19 for 2020.

To accept her award, Kate was joined on stage by her and Derek’s children Darcey, 18, and Billy, 15.

She began her moving speech: ‘This is bittersweet, isn’t it? It’s very bitter to be here, with the wonderful Darcey and Billy.

“I promised them they didn’t have to say anything. We’re actually halfway through the first year of the first times.

‘A first Easter and first birthdays, without Derek. It’s so strange to be here for the first Television Awards without him.

Derek was previously the star of the documentaries Kate Garraway: Finding Derek (2021) and Kate Garraway: Caring For Derek (2022).

The day before the National Television Awards, Kate remembered Derek in honour of their 20th wedding anniversary.

She wrote on Instagram: ‘Today would have been my 20th wedding anniversary with Derek.

‘I mean, it’s still my 20th wedding anniversary with Derek, it’s just one of those days that we’ve talked about, like Christmas coming up, Easter. All those things – his birthday – where you really feel a punch in the gut.

‘This time especially I feel really sorry for myself, I’m afraid, because it’s such a personal matter.

‘The others, when he was here, were just as busy with his family, his friends, that kind of thing, while this day is so special for him and me.’

‘The fact that he is not there makes me very sad and I experience his absence as a speeding, speeding train.

“I’ve been surrendering to the grief, as everyone tells me to do, and re-reading some of his beautiful anniversary messages on previous cards, which I’m so grateful for to have had that kind of romance and love in my life. I’m so lucky.”

On Thursday morning, Kate returned to the helm of Good Morning Britain and discussed her win.

She said the documentary was: ‘A total tribute to Derek, it was his story, and to the production company that made it so beautifully for him and really for all the carers.

I am happy [Susanna] said it was such a beautiful speech because it was such an out of body experience coming off the stage [and said] “Do I feel like doing anything?!”

“Because it’s such a strange moment and the kids were so sweet, so thank you.”

Kate concluded: ‘It’s for the carers, for the vulnerable people who need care and for the people who look after them, the brilliant professional carers.’
