Kate Garraway gives major update on husband Derek Draper’s health and reveals son Billy, 13, burst into tears after ‘uplifting’ development

Kate Garraway has given an important update on the health of her husband Derek Draper.

Appearing on Loose Women on Thursday, the GMB presenter, 56, was asked by presenter Linda Robson if Derek, 55, could speak, leading to the update.

The author and former lobbyist was left on the verge of death on several occasions since contracting Covid at the start of the pandemic in March 2020, is now wheelchair bound and has learned to speak again – but needs 24/7 care at home.

She revealed, “It’s very much a whisper. I don’t think we’re necessarily going to have a conversation, but you’re going to get great moments. Billy had a new basketball and was bouncing with it, and he said “is that a new ball?” He said, ‘It’s fun’…

“It was great to see that he could do it. Billy was in tears; they were cuddling. It’s that kind of thing that really lifts you up, and the next day he was very quiet.’

In April, Derek’s smiling return from the hospital gave new hope to his family and friends – three years after his body was first ravaged by Covid-19 and sepsis.

Derek was taken to hospital on March 30 and remained unconscious and later slipped into a coma. Days later, Kate and her children have been isolated at home after showing “mild symptoms.”

She said at the time: “Derek is still in intensive care and still very sick. I’m afraid it remains an excruciatingly worrying time. I’m afraid he’s still in very critical condition, but he’s still here, so there’s hope.’

The following month his health continued to deteriorate.

Kate said at the time, “The journey for me and my family seems far from over as every day my heart sinks as I learn new and devastating ways this virus has more battles for Derek to fight.
