The couple were shocked after learning their second child had been born with congenital pneumonia.
Kate spent days without her baby amid the health scare.
Congenital pneumonia can cause breathing problems within the first 24 hours of life and can be caused by an infection in the fetal fluid.
‘As soon as I entered the theater, I panicked. “I’ve never had a panic attack before, but I can imagine what a panic attack feels like,” Kate said.
‘I had a spinal cord, so I was numb from the waist down and I felt so claustrophobic.’
“Rio tried to talk to me, but I literally couldn’t talk to anyone. Everyone was happy in the room and I kept saying, “Should I be excited right now?” I don’t know what happened to me.’
Kate’s panic increased after Shae was born when she remembered her daughter not crying immediately.
‘She was really cold and very blue. I felt very distant when they gave her to me, so it felt very different for Cree, I had no connection.
“Then she was in the recovery room screaming. Normally you can calm them down, so I asked the midwife “can I feed her”. I’m bottle feeding, and she looked at me and said, “I’m going to feed her.” And when she said that, I knew something was wrong.”

Shae was then taken to the NICU and Rio went with her, leaving Kate alone. ‘I’m sitting in the room, no Rio, no baby and I’m watching Love Island. I just felt like it was a complete experience. I’ve given birth, there’s no one here, how guilty I feel when I’m watching Love Island and my baby is in the NICU,” Kate explained.
Later, Kate was allowed to go to the intensive care unit to see Shae. ‘I was hysterical. I couldn’t pick her up. I didn’t really want to be there,” an emotional Kate recalled.
“It was harder being next to her and not being able to be with her and just staring at her when she wasn’t well than it was not being with her. Then I felt terrible guilt because I didn’t want to be there. My mother’s guilt overcame me from the moment she was born.’
After five days in the hospital, both Kate and Shae were allowed to go home, but Kate admitted that she “felt a little more needy around Shay, I want to feed her more and have her next to me.” The first few weeks I just needed her next to me.’
