On Friday, hours after the Princess of Wales released her video message to the world, Harry and Meghan released a statement from Montecito.
It was not loving and extensive.
“We wish Kate and the family health and healing” – not William by name, nor young George, Charlotte and Louis – “and hope they can do this privately and in peace.”
Compared to King Charles’s exuberant pride in his ‘beloved daughter-in-law’ and her ‘courage’ in coming out, this feels… falling short.
Where was the feeling of familial love – or anything remotely personal about the woman Harry once called “the big sister I never had”?

Just one emotionally stingy, generic default line. From two people who never run out of words to describe their complaints.
No doubt there was resentment behind this statement.
After all, the Duke and Duchess would have heard the terrible news about Kate along with the rest of us.
“They had no idea,” a source told the New York Post.
Of course not! It seems like the only people surprised by this are the Sussexes themselves.
Their bloodless statement was followed by another colossal misstep: the news that Harry and Meghan had contacted Kate privately on Friday evening.
Is it really a private gesture if the world’s media were then informed?
These two just can’t get out of the way. If they had any hope of rebuilding an ounce of trust with Kate and William, none of us would have ever known about these “private” messages.
Despite complaining mercilessly about the intrusive media – of which they are a part, with Netflix and podcasts and book deals and an upcoming cooking show and countless interviews and speeches – Harry and Meghan have no concept of discretion whatsoever.
Despite these most serious moments, they are still unable to recognize when a story has nothing to do with them.
Or when it would benefit everyone, especially their sick sister-in-law and her small children, if they kept their mouths shut.
Not that big of a question, right?
As always, it seems like this was all meant to benefit Harry and Meghan.
We must understand that despite their most serious estrangement, they are still in regular contact with the future king and queen.
Please. As if Kate and William don’t screen their calls and messages.

But that’s the hall of mirrors at House Sussex, isn’t it? Someone else is always the problem, always to blame, Harry, Meghan and their supporters are always the victims.
And what about their friend Christopher Bouzy?
He has been in the spotlight since Kate’s announcement, claiming that the royal family was not only “lying” but also buying into all the conspiracy theories doing the rounds, appearing to compare the princess’ video to “North Korean propaganda.”
If Harry and Meghan had any intention of showing good faith to the royal family, they would tell Scobie and Bouzy to shut up.
But they won’t. They can’t. The Sussexes are constitutionally incapable of behaving like adults who have their priorities in order, their values in check, and who only regret hurting Kate, the last person who deserved it.
If there ever was the slightest hope of reconciliation, it is gone forever.
Stress is the last thing anyone fighting cancer needs. So how necessary is it that Harry and Meghan are truly excluded.
