The British are known as a nation of animal lovers, but few can match Kate Beckinsale.

The actress has revealed that she misses her cat so much that she sleeps with his ashes every night.

The 50-year-old was 'absolutely heartbroken' when Clive died in June at the age of 19 – and she is clearly still grieving.

After a fan asked on Instagram if he had been cremated or buried, she wrote: “Cremated and call me weird but I sleep with his casket in my bed every night.”

She also posted a montage of photos of 'Things and people that have given me comfort or uplifted me', including a portrait of Clive surrounded by candles.

Ms Beckinsale, who has 5.6 million followers on the social media site, regularly kept her fans updated on the grey-and-white Persian's antics.

When he died she wrote: 'My heart is absolutely and completely broken. Every part of my house feels like it belongs.”

The self-confessed 'cat person' and star of the Underworld horror films, was given Clive as a kitten.

She regularly dressed him for Christmas and Halloween – and they were often seen in matching outfits.
