Kate has caused a stir on social media over the past year due to several unexplained health issues, including spending weeks in hospital and losing so much weight that fans called her “too thin.”

Last week, she revealed her weight loss was due to the “stress and grief” of her stepfather’s death and her mother’s cancer diagnosis, while responding to internet trolls.

The actress hit out at some of her “asshole” followers, who told her to gain weight in the comments below an Instagram post.

After she shared a video clip of herself wearing a crop top and bikini bottoms, one follower wondered where her “butt” had gone and encouraged Kate to “do some squats.”

Another claimed her body had “shrunk,” while another insisted she “looked upset” in the video posted Monday night.

However, Kate hit back at the cruel comments, explaining that there were several reasons for her changed figure, including a six-week hospital stay.

She replied, “No, actually I watched my stepfather die in a shocking way, my mother has stage 4 cancer and I have lost a lot of people due to stress and grief…

‘Very soon after that I was in hospital for six weeks because the grief had burned a hole in my oesophagus, causing me to vomit huge amounts of blood and I had difficulty eating…

“And I just worked really hard on a film that was actually quite triggering, because it also dealt with the theme of my father’s death, so I’m not really worried about what you think of my ass. Maybe you should worry about your own f***ing ass. I suggest you put something in it, like a big pineapple or a brick.”

Kate’s stepfather Roy Battersby died in January from a “massive stroke” while battling two forms of cancer, which he had been diagnosed with the previous summer.

Shortly after his death, Kate also revealed that her mother Judy Loe had also been diagnosed with stage four cancer.

In March, Kate announced that she had been hospitalized after her tear-jerking selfies caused a stir among her fans.

She later explained the reason for her hospitalization in a now-deleted Instagram post: “I was in the hospital for 6 weeks vomiting a lot of blood due to a Mallory Weiss tear, caused by the stress of a whole year of having a hole between my esophagus and my esophagus torn. [sic] and stomach.’

“That’s what I’m willing to disclose that has contributed to some weight loss. What you think about my appearance and how I should look, regardless of any circumstances in my life and my family’s life, is not important.”

In recent months, Kate has been caring for her mother and late stepmother, after flying them from the UK to Los Angeles to stay with her.

“Kate has been caring for her parents, who are both seriously ill, for most of the year,” a source exclusively revealed to DailyMail.com late last year. “She brought them to her home in LA and made caring for them her number one priority.”

On January 10, Kate announced the death of her stepfather Roy at the age of 87.

The insider revealed that the actress – whose biological father Richard Beckinsale died of a heart attack in his sleep in 1979 at age 31 – has been feeling the emotional toll in recent months.

“She has been spotted crying in the hallways of UCLA Hospital several times this week,” the source added. “Her friends are very concerned that she has been under unrelenting pressure for months, barely sleeping or eating.

‘Kate seems very strong, but this has been incredibly hard and, having lost her father at such a young age, it has affected her deeply. Her friends are concerned for her own health.’

A second source explained that her mother Judy has chosen to keep her health struggles private, saying: “She’s extraordinary, you wouldn’t even know it when you look at her. She’s kept a very positive attitude through everything.”

Kate’s mother Judy married Roy 18 years after Kate’s father, Porridge star Richard Beckinsale, died.

Roy enjoyed his own successful career as a director, working on major British on-screen hits including Inspector Morse and Cracker. His most recent directing credit was on an episode of A Touch Of Frost in 2006.

Kate’s biological father Richard Beckinsale was best known for his roles as Lennie Godber in the BBC sitcom Porridge and Alan Moore in the ITV sitcom Rising Damp.

He also had a daughter, Samantha, 55, who is his only child from his marriage to Margaret Bradley.
