Kasabian star Serge Pizzorno opens up to Geoff Shreeves about playing for Nottingham Forest’s youth team, getting ‘carried away’ while supporting his beloved Leicester – and his screamer at Soccer Aid 2012
It is widely regarded as the greatest goal ever scored by a celebrity on Soccer AM.
Live on Sky Sports’ morning show, Kasabian star Serge Pizzorno threw the ball up before hitting it into a small hoop – while famously wearing a pair of winkle pickers.
But the 43-year-old musician has admitted the stunning feat of skill – which has been viewed millions of times online – wasn’t as impressive as everyone thinks.
Speaking to Geoff Shreeves on his Football, Music and Me podcast, Serge revealed that he wasn’t actually wearing Winklepickers and had in fact consciously worn more sensible footwear: a pair of Clarks desert boots.
He said: ‘We had played in Paris the night before and had a few beers in the back of the tour bus.’

Kasabian had to return to London for a night to film the Sky Sports show, but that didn’t stop the band from being stuck on the bus.
They were told, ‘Oh, you have to be there at seven in the morning. We were like, “S***, we might as well do that, you know…” So we definitely had a few beers.”
“And at that moment I said, ‘I’m just going to try something tomorrow.’ You gotta try something.
“I wore Clark’s desert boots because I purposely knew they were the coolest shoes you could wear without looking desperate.
‘You don’t want to show up at Copa Mundials [football boots], you know what I mean? You can’t look like you’re taking it too seriously.
“I’m probably going to kill a lot of people’s dreams there, but I wasn’t wearing Winklepickers… Every time I look at them I think, ‘How did no one notice they weren’t Winklepickers?’
Pizzorno discussed his incredible goal he scored on Soccer AM and his football upbringing
The star was on the books of Nottingham Forest from the age of 10 to 13, when all he wanted to do was play for his beloved Leicester City.
He told Geoff: “I wore my Leicester socks under my Forest kit, just to know I wasn’t being too disloyal.
‘Forest was quite a team at the time. You know, they played in the Premier League.
‘I remember one night I was playing for Forest, I scored, I took it around someone and I scored it, a toepoke, and the manager went crazy and shouted, ‘You don’t do that… That’s not how you …’ I thought: ‘I scored, didn’t I?’
‘I looked at Bebeto and Romario, you know what I mean, I came from that angle a bit. And then he dragged me away, I got yelled at. I remember thinking at the time, “This is probably not for me.” I definitely thought football was more like entertainment, and I loved that.
‘They would have called me a luxury player, I think. A bit like Berbatov. I didn’t quite fit in.’
Pizzorno jokingly compared himself to Dimitar Berbatov when he was a youth player at Forest
Serge, whose band released a new summer anthem this week entitled Coming Back To Me For Good, has been a loyal Leicester supporter all his life and admits he got carried away during a few away games.
He said: ‘We played against Chelsea [away] in the cup. We were in the first division and came up 2-0, or maybe 2-1. We ended up losing 4-2, but I was with all my friends and I had a few beers, a few too many beers.
‘And I ended up stealing the Christmas tree from Chelsea’s reception. So I was running along King’s Road with a tree and I heard the plug on the Christmas lights vibrating and then the stewards tapped me: “Oh mate, you’ve got our Christmas tree.”
‘And I was like, ‘Ah, sorry mate.’ But it’s that football that just makes you go crazy, isn’t it?’
Serge also scored a screamer for Soccer Aid in 2012 when he beat David Seaman at Old Trafford in the charity football match.
The 43-year-old is still on cloud nine after scoring a screamer for the Rest of the World at Soccer Aid in 2012
He recalled: ‘So I’m standing on the left side of Old Trafford, 80,000, full house and my back isn’t in the best condition. So Freddie Ljungberg has the ball and he passed it on.
“I kept up my run, kept it to the side, played it through. Now I can’t remember the defender, but the defender is fast. It could have been Des Walker
“My back is in a state, so I don’t go around him. So as soon as the ball leaves Ljungberg’s foot, I say, “I’m going to hit this one, because I can’t get around him.”
‘And I noticed that David Seaman was just a little bit off his line. You know, you have it in your head what you want to do. But it never works out. But this time I hit him, and I hit him slowly. I thought, “You know what, that went in!” And it just hit it.
‘I went to another dimension. The adrenaline just hit me, bang, just. So I turn around, and there was Clarence Seedorf, Freddie Ljungberg, Mike Myers, and then Will Ferrell. And I thought, “Is this going to get any weirder?”
