Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo threaten to leave the Today show in a bizarre social media prank
They are two of Channel Nine’s main stars.
And on Friday, Today show hosts Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo told fans they were prepared to leave the show unless viewers sent proof they were watching.
Meanwhile, the ‘threat’ turned out to be an elaborate prank by the Today team.
Sportscaster Alex Cullen joined the couple in the Today studio as they filmed the gag.
“We had a bit of a weird morning on the Today show this morning,” Karl began, trying to keep a straight face.
Karl and his Today Show co-host Sarah Abo (pictured) threatened to quit the show in a hilarious prank video on Friday.
“It’s like there’s a glitch in the matrix,” he continued, adding, “Actually, I don’t know if there are people looking out there.”
He then urged social media users to take a photo and submit it to ‘prove’ they were watching the show.
He then added, “Otherwise, we can go home as well.”
Sarah agreed, saying, “We could go home,” before Alex suggested, “Is this real? Are we in a dream?”
The video may have been a self-deprecating nod to the fact that the Today show typically comes second to rival Sunrise in TV breakfast wars.
“We’ve had a bit of a strange morning on the Today show this morning,” Karl began, struggling to keep a straight face.
The Seven Network declared Sunrise Australia’s highest rated breakfast show for 2022 last September.
In a press release, Seven said the morning show is number one in its time slot for the 19th consecutive year.
Meanwhile, Today scored an all-too-rare ratings victory last month over Sunrise.
The show drew an average audience of 206,000 in the five capital cities, more than the ‘No. 1 Australia’ Sunrise, which had 190,000 metropolitan viewers. .
