Karine Jean-Pierre reveals she has SPLIT from her former CNN anchor partner Suzanne Malveaux in Vogue interview about being a ‘single mom’ and ‘co-parent’ to their adopted nine-year-old daughter
Karine Jean-Pierre has separated from Suzanne Malveaux, her partner for more than a decade, the White House press secretary revealed in an interview with Vogue.
The two share custody of their nine-year-old daughter Soleil.
“I am a single mother co-parenting this wonderful child,” Jean-Pierre told the newspaper magazine. “Our top priority is her privacy and making sure we create an environment that is nurturing.”
Vogue gave Jean-Pierre the profile treatment in its September issue, earning her a laudatory article, as it did for other administration figures, including first lady Jill Biden and former White House press secretary Jen Psaki.
The 3,800-word profile includes descriptions of the “bright colors and eye-catching eyeshadow” Jean-Pierre, 49, wears, but also talks about her suicide attempt and her difficulty coming out as gay to her parents – topics that Jean -Pierre also addressed in her memoir ‘Moving Forward.

Malveaux and Jean-Pierre met at the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, where Malveaux, a CNN correspondent at the time, covered the event and Jean-Pierre worked for President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign.
They moved in together in Washington, DC, in early 2014, Jean-Pierre wrote in her memoir. Malveaux left her CNN anchor job shortly after Jean-Pierre was promoted from deputy press secretary to chief press secretary
Malveaux had already begun the adoption process when she and Jean-Pierre were dating. She adopted Soleil — which is French for “sun” — in May 2014. Jean-Pierre formally adopted Soleil a few years later.
The White House press secretary told Vogue that having a child was “a thousand percent” off her to-do list.
Born in Martinique and moving to New York with her family as a child, Jean-Pierre had spent much of her childhood helping raise her younger siblings.
“I think that’s one of the reasons I left to campaign,” said Jean-Pierre. “Because it took me away from the responsibilities of home.”
But she said she now sees parenting as part of her work motivation.
Everything we do, under the leadership of the president, will matter, not just today, but tomorrow and for the rest of our lives,” said Jean-Pierre. “What we do will certainly change the trajectory of her life.”

Jean-Pierre has received criticism for being too robotic and too reliant on reading from the briefing book that is always at hand – so close it looks like one of the photos in Vogue where the White House Press Secretary is talking to her as she poses in front of the West Wing.
“I don’t take it personally,” she told Vogue about the criticism. “I represent the president, so little things are off the menu.”
In her daily press conferences, which last about 45 minutes to an hour, Jean-Pierre deals with topics as diverse as the war in Ukraine, Republicans on Capitol Hill and investigations into President Joe Biden’s eldest son Hunter.
She told Vogue that “she doesn’t speak for herself on stage.”
Her daily routine, she told the magazine, involves waking up at 5 a.m. and arriving at the White House at 7 a.m. At 8:15 a.m., she has her first meeting of the day in Chief of Staff Jeff Zients’ office.
Before her daily press conferences, she goes through preparations with White House Press Office staff. Any updates to the day’s news or statements are printed, punched and added to Jean-Pierre’s folder.
“No office in America relies on punchers like this,” notes Vogue, noting that Jean-Pierre “sounds repetitive.” That’s because she’s rehearsing. In preparation, she chooses the adjectives and verbs with great care.’

The magazine writes of Jean-Pierre: “She meets with the White House press almost daily – favoring bright colors and bold eye shadows – and while she is more reserved than some of her predecessors and less likely to respond to provocations with a She is ready for social media and has honed her own technique: disarm with a smile and then state the facts.”
Vogue also reveals that Jean-Pierre doesn’t drink coffee or alcohol and prefers a snack of roasted seaweed or a morning banana smoothie.
Jean-Pierre won’t stay in this job “forever,” the magazine notes without giving any indication of what’s next for her.
