Top cop makes grim admission about Westfield Bondi stabbing – as devastated Aussies pay tribute to the victims

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb has revealed it could take weeks before all six victims of the horrific Bondi Junction attack are identified.

Police Commissioner Webb made the announcement at a press conference on Sunday, revealing that two of the victims were from abroad.

“It may take some time before we can identify all the victims as some family members do not live in Australia,” she said.

Police Commissioner Webb said assistance is being offered to families and friends affected by the attack.

β€œA family liaison has been appointed for each family to work with them at this extremely difficult time for them,” she said.

Six innocent people were killed after Joel Cauchi, 40, was involved in a terrifying stabbing in local Westfield on Saturday.

The victims included 38-year-old mother Ashlee Good and her nine-month-old daughter Harriet, who was injured and is in a serious but stable condition.

Cauchi was shot by NSW Police Inspector Amy Scott, one of the first officers on the scene.

Devastated locals gathered on Sunday to show support for the victims of Westfield by paying moving tributes at the scene of the attack.

Residents lay flowers on a nearby sidewalk outside the Westfield, adding a heartfelt message to the bouquets.

From what started as a modest pink bouquet with the simple message ‘RIP’ and a love heart, the tribute has grown significantly.

Many children were accompanied by parents to lay their floral tributes in Sydney’s popular shopping district.

A woman with a toddler and a baby in a pram was seen laying flowers, no doubt moved by the plight of Ms Good and her nine-month-old daughter.

While the flowers were being laid, emergency services were seen wheeling the bodies of the victims out of the shopping center on stretchers.

A row of white vans were parked to the side, waiting to take the victims and the deceased attacker away from the scene.

The workers looked despondent as they wheeled out the bodies, which were in maroon bags.

Shortly after leaving the shopping center, the vans drove past the floral tribute, which was located next to the closed road.

Federal MP for Wentworth, Allegra Spender, described it as ‘heartbreaking’.

β€œWe are all devastated by the shocking attack at Bondi Junction, which left innocent people dead in a senseless act of violence. It’s heartbreaking,” she said.

β€œMy sincere condolences go out to the victims, their families and everyone affected. Our thoughts are with each of them.”

Waverley mayor Paula Masselos said she was in ‘complete disbelief’.

β€œIt’s a close-knit community, people know each other because it’s a meeting place and considered safe, especially Westfield, where parents take their children,” she said.

‘What is important is that this man acted alone. He was known to the Queensland Police Service. So we think there were mental health issues.”

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the attack.

“Yesterday’s events have shocked the nation,” he said.

“Australians are waking up and trying to deal with the shock and trauma that will result from what has happened, with acts of violence that are unspeakable and simply beyond comprehension.”

‘People shopping on Saturday afternoon should be safe and not put at risk, but tragically we saw a loss of life and people will be mourning their loved ones today.

‘We also know that there are many people still in hospital recovering and our thoughts and prayers are with them. But at this time we also thank our police and emergency services.’
