The Supreme Court is expected to hear on Monday a petition challenging the Uttar Pradesh government’s order requiring eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display the names of their owners.

A bench comprising Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti is likely to hear the plea filed by the NGO Association of Protection of Civil Rights.

Days after the Muzaffarnagar police asked all eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to list the names of their owners, the Uttar Pradesh government on Friday extended the controversial order to the entire state.

The move, which was taken by the Muzaffarnagar police earlier this week, has been strongly criticised by opposition parties and some members of the ruling NDA at the centre, who say it targets Muslim traders.
