Travis Kelce overstretched his knee during the Chiefs’ final practice before their opener against Detroit, casting doubt on All-Pro tight end status as Kansas City faced the Lions at Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday night.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid said the injury occurred during their last full workout on Tuesday, but gave no further details. Players in the locker room said Kelce was injured in a red zone play but was able to limp off the field under his own power.
“We’ll just see how he does going forward,” Reid said.
Kelce, 33, has not missed a game due to injury since his rookie season in 2013, when a microfracture procedure to fix a cartilage problem in his knee ended it after one game. He has twice skipped meaningless matches to close out the regular season.
“I was involved in that game (that Kelce got hurt),” Chiefs wide receiver Skyy Moore said Tuesday. “I was talking to someone and he was limping and just walking off the field. It was a good sign to see him get up alone and go off the field.”
