Kansas City Chiefs backup BJ Thompson was taken to the hospital in stable condition Thursday after the defensive lineman suffered a heart attack during a special teams meeting, a source told the Associated Press.
The source said the team’s medical staff was able to respond quickly and treat Thompson until paramedics arrived.
The Chiefs planned to complete their voluntary offseason workouts Thursday, but a team spokesman said the practice would be postponed until Friday. That’s when Chiefs coach Andy Reid and other players will speak to reporters.
The 27-year-old Thompson was a fifth-round pick of the Chiefs in last year’s draft, followed by Stephen F. Austin. The only game Thompson appeared in was their regular season finale against the Los Angeles Chargers, when Kansas City had already clinched a playoff spot. Thompson had two tackles in that game.
Last week, Thompson was part of the Chiefs team that visited the White House to celebrate their Super Bowl title.
