Kangaroo Point shark owner is slammed for keeping sea creatures in tank at Sydney property
Homeowner slammed for keeping sharks in aquarium in his living room: ‘The real ocean is what makes them happy’

A homeowner has come under fire for keeping sharks in an aquarium on his property.
The man posted a video showing off his huge 20,000 liter tank at his mansion in Kangaroo Point, south Sydney.
He had changed the water in the tank by funneling liquid from a truck parked in front of the house.
“Water change of 10,000L on my shark aquarium makes the animals happy,” read the post on TikTok handle thegyp_aus.
Social media users disagreed that the homeowner kept sharks as pets, with several claiming he was robbing the sea creatures of their “freedom.”
But the tank owner said his sharks (pictured, one in another of his videos) were “still at the bottom of the tank” in the shallows while he was cleaning up
The TikTokker who goes by the name thegyp_aus posted a video of him cleaning the huge 20,000 liter tank in a living space in his home
The homeowner had half emptied the tank and was filling it with fresh water, leading some to wonder where the sharks were being kept in the meantime.
One of them suggested that they were held in a bathtub with a wink.
The homeowner said the sharks were “still at the bottom of the tank” in the shallows while he was cleaning up.
“The tank is 20,000 gallons, they swim in the bottom half of the tank,” he said.
Several social media users objected to the sharks being confined in such a small space.
“True ocean and freedom is what makes them happy,” one wrote.
“Or you can let him roam free and happy in the sea instead,” another wrote.
A third added: ‘No, the tank is way too small, it’s like a beta in a small fishbowl… not appropriate.’
Others were speechless at the enthusiastic shark owner’s “amazing” tank.
“Cool shark aquarium, if I had a tank like this I would go crazy with the plants and add some schooling fish,” one wrote.
‘I love the tank! Looks great,” added another.
Some were amazed at how many liters of water had to be pumped into the tank.

“Damn, that’s more water than one person uses in a year!” one wrote.
Another video posted by the same man showed his tank full of water with a variety of sharks and other sea creatures swimming around.
“I will never whine about a water change again,” one social media user wrote.
The homeowner has accumulated millions of views with his various videos.
He revealed that he built the massive tank during a renovation after purchasing the property in 2021.
The tank is home to 11 different shark species, including Bamboo, Port Jackson, and White Tip Reef, as well as a grouper and two moray eels.
The owner told The Daily Telegraph that he had no experience keeping fish before the tank was built.
“The sharks have been brought in from Cairns, most of them are tropical reef sharks. I get a lot of comments about how cruel it is to keep them in such a big tank,” he said.
“I have to hand-feed the sharks from the side of the tank because it’s not safe to hand-feed them while I’m in it. I also use a diver to clean the tank because I’m afraid the sharks will eat me if I jump in!’
