Kane Cornes announces shock career move that has split footy fans

  • Kane Cornes has landed a new role at Channel 7
  • Football legend made a name for himself on Channel 9
  • He said he is excited to join ‘the real home of the AFL’

Football fans will be able to follow Kane Cornes on Channel 7 next season after the outspoken media personality confirmed he has left Channel 9 for the rival broadcaster.

The Port Adelaide star has become one of the most divisive figures in world football due to his strong opinions on the sport, which he expressed during his media career at Nine and SEN.

Fox Footy had been heavily linked with a move for the 41-year-old, but he announced on Tuesday that he will take his talents to Seven, where he will work on matchday and evening news and football programmes.

“It was an opportunity that I was very happy about. It was too good to pass up,” he said on SEN radio on Tuesday.

‘It’s had a bit of a negative impact on me at Channel 9 because they’re so great and it’s such a great place to work.

‘I get along well with everyone there and I think the shows we do there are excellent.

“It was a weight off my shoulders to tell everyone like I did on Monday. I’m now going to a place where I really want to work.”

The premiership winner will join the 7AFL team from next season, saying in a press release released by the broadcaster that he is excited to be part of “the true home of the AFL”.

“I have enormous confidence in the network’s leadership and the exciting direction of 7AFL’s ground-breaking broadcasts,” he said.

‘The chance to work on the biggest games in a free-to-air format and share my insights via 7NEWS and throughout the week is a great opportunity.

‘Seven is the true home of the AFL and next season promises to be the most exciting yet. I’m looking forward to being a part of it.’

Anthony De Ceglie, Seven’s news director, praised Cornes’ work as a football commentator.

“Kane is the number one voice in football,” he said. “He makes the news or presents the smartest possible view on the issue.

‘We can’t wait to welcome Kane to the Seven family and look forward to hearing his sharp insights regularly on 7NEWS throughout the year.’

Given his divisive nature, the reaction from football fans was unsurprisingly divided.

“Say it isn’t true,” said one disappointed fan.

‘Just when I thought the commentary couldn’t get any worse… Channel 7 said: “Hold my beer,”‘ said another.

A third fan added: ‘Fox Footy subscriptions have skyrocketed.’

Others, however, were very happy with it.

“Great acquisition,” said one fan. Another said, “I actually don’t mind this.”

A third fan said, “I can’t wait,” using clapping emojis.
