Kamala Harris ‘will be the next president’ if she flips red North Carolina blue, says state’s Dem governor

North Carolina’s Democratic governor claims that if Kamala Harris can turn his state blue, she will defeat Donald Trump in November.

North Carolina has traditionally been colored red, but since Barack Obama won the city in 2008, it has become a question mark.

Roy Cooper, the outgoing governor, is an example of a Democratic country that has won the election. He believes that if Harris repeats his performance, she will win the presidential election.

“She knows if she wins North Carolina, she’s the next president of the United States, because Trump has no other path,” Cooper told Face the Nation on Sunday.

Cooper, who was mentioned as a possible running mate for Harris before indicating he didn’t want the job, noted that Harris visited the Tar Heel State 17 times as vice president.

“This was the closest Biden-Harris lost in 2020, just 1.3%. So the fact that Kamala Harris, as vice president of the United States, has been to North Carolina 17 times shows that she cares about our state,” he told CBS.

Cooper’s term is ending, but his former Attorney General Josh Stein is the heavy favorite to defeat Trump-backed Republican Mark Robinson on Nov. 5.

While polls show Harris closer to Trump than Biden was four years ago, his preference still leans toward the former president.

Both RealClearPolitics and FiveThirtyEight polls showed Trump ahead by less than a percentage point on Sunday.

However, Cooper believes a surprise between Harris and Walz is possible after the Cook Political Report labeled the race a toss-up.

“If we continue to get this information out to the American public and to the people here in North Carolina, that Kamala Harris has an economic plan that will lower costs for everyday people, that will help families thrive, that will protect women’s reproductive freedom. I think that’s ultimately what will work here,” Cooper said.

Cooper also did not deny that he would express interest in a job in a Harris-Walz administration. When asked if he would consider it, he said only “we’ll see.”

Earlier this week, Democrats saw some hope in the South after polls showed an increase in support for Kamala Harris in Georgia and North Carolina.

Cooper, the outgoing governor, is an example of a Democratic who has won at the state level and believes that if Harris repeats his feat, she will win the presidency.

According to the latest Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll, Harris has a two percentage point lead over Republican rival Donald Trump in both states.

The vice president’s campaign is heavily focused on her efforts in the South. Harris frequently visits Georgia, which President Joe Biden narrowly won in 2020, and North Carolina, which she still hopes to capture from Trump.

Local Democratic leaders, citing growing enthusiasm for her candidacy, are now confident Harris, 59, can pull off the first dual victory in Georgia and North Carolina since Jimmy Carter in 1976, Bloomberg reported.

But the last I&I/TIPP survey shows that Trump is gaining strength among voters in key swing states, with a probability of more than 50 percent in five of those states.

As it stands, Trump is projected to win Pennsylvania, Arizona, Nevada and Georgia — all of which were won by Democrats in 2020 — and North Carolina. Harris retains the lead in the “blue wall” states of Michigan and Wisconsin.

Since Biden dropped his re-election campaign and endorsed Harris, the vice president has focused on the so-called “blue wall” states that have been central to successful Democratic campaigns.

She has also visited Arizona, Nevada, Georgia and North Carolina frequently.

Harris is believed to have opened an electoral path in the traditionally Republican states of Georgia and North Carolina, where no Democrat has won a joint election in nearly 50 years.

Harris’ campaign has the largest in-state operation in Georgia of any Democratic presidential campaign, Bloomberg reported, with 24 offices and more than 190 staffers.

Harris and Trump will debate for the first time on Tuesday night in Philadelphia.

The competition will be broadcast and presented by ABC News, but will also be simulcast on several other networks and streaming services.
