Kamala Harris maintains a lead over Donald Trump, both overall and among independent voters, in a new poll.
Harris is ahead at 47% and former President Trump is at 44%, according to a survey of 11,778 voters conducted by Morning Consult between August 9 and 11.
The current vice president was at 48% in the same poll last week, but maintains a 42-37 lead over Trump among independent voters. At least 12% said they would vote for an independent.
Morning Consult has put Harris first in every poll they’ve conducted since late July, when they began running her against Trump.
It was the first survey the pollster conducted since Harris announced Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate.

Harris is ahead at 47%, while former President Trump is at 44%, according to a poll of 11,778 voters conducted by Morning Consult between Aug. 9 and 11.
Harris’ key demographics include Black voters (73%-18%) and voters between the ages of 18 and 34 (48%-41%).
That’s consistent with a new poll of Gen Z and millennial voters in key states that found the vice president leading the former president 51 percent to 42 percent in a head-to-head race.
The poll, sponsored by Don’t PAC Down, which surveyed voters aged 18 to 29 in eight key states, is a major change from before President Biden withdrew from the race last month.
Harris continues to gain popularity, with 49% of voters favoring him versus 47% unfavorably, while Trump’s net favorability stands at -12.
Still, it appears Harris’ honeymoon is over. Not only is she down one point from last week, but voters also have a more negative view of the economy than they did in the last year of polling.
The recent recession, which Trump calls the “Kamala Crash,” has seen negative views of the economy outnumber positive views by 24 points.
Trump was the overwhelming favorite last month when he made a triumphant appearance at the Republican Party convention in Milwaukee after being shot in an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania.
But after Harris took over from Biden, the liberal media has fully gotten behind her campaign and she has gained momentum. The latest polling average from Real Clear Politics shows Harris with a half-point lead over Trump. In the betting averages, that lead is higher, at 5.8 percentage points.

In a recent example, Harris was trusted more on economic issues than Trump, marking a major shift in voter sentiment after Biden decided to withdraw.
The survey, conducted for the Financial Times and the Ross School of Business, found Harris with a 1-point lead. It is the first time a Democratic presidential candidate has led Trump on the economy since the poll began tracking voter sentiment on the issue nearly a year ago.
Another New York Times/Siena College poll last week found Harris ahead in key swing states Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Among likely voters in each state, 50 percent said they were likely to vote for Harris, while 46 percent said they would vote for Trump.
Trump began his battle on Monday with a much-discussed interview with Elon Musk at X Spaces. However, the interview caused some controversy because it started late due to technical issues.
However, according to The New York Times, donors are concerned about Trump’s recent strategy.
At an Aug. 2 dinner in The Hamptons, Trump’s core supporters hoped he would “send a signal that he is recalibrating his policies after a series of damaging mistakes.”
However, he also discussed his “stop the theft” claims that the 2020 election was rigged, and advisers reportedly advised him to drop those claims.
The former president risked further unrest last night by falsely claiming that his Democratic opponent had doctored an image of the crowd at her rally in Detroit last week.

The Trump campaign has considered many options to bolster the president’s efforts, including the return of iconic campaign manager Kellyanne Conway, with the support of both Melania and Lara Trump.
Trump’s 2024 campaign has suffered three blows from the public reception of vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance, the “honeymoon” Harris is experiencing as she enters the race and a similar effect on her choice of running mate Tim Walz.
What looked like a coronation for Trump to return to the White House at the expense of Biden has now turned into a neck-and-neck race, with Harris starting to take a lead in the polls.
However, the “honeymoon phase” of both Harris’ campaign and Walz’s announcement appears to be ending with claims of “stolen valor” over the Minnesota governor’s military service.
Biden himself finally admitted on Sunday that he had withdrawn from the race because the polls between him and Trump were so bad that they threatened to wipe out Democrats at all levels.
