Kamala Harris says when people make fun of her laughter it’s part of the adjustment for Americans getting used to the first female vice president and suggested it’s a form of sexism.

Speaking to actress Drew Barrymore on her daytime talk show, Harris discussed how she often sees the audience drawing attention to her smile. Critics have even labeled her laugh as a joke and have collected examples of her chuckling in videos making fun of the VP.

β€œYou asked me earlier what it means to be the first woman (vice president),” Harris told Barrymore during an episode this week. “And you know, it’s funny, because people are still getting used to this, right?”

She then claimed that an example of continued misogyny where the public adapts to having a female vice president is when people draw more attention to her smile or mannerism.

Critics who argue that Harris is unlikable often cite her laugh as the reason she misleads people, calling it a “cackle.”

‘I mean, my staff for example, they sometimes show me little things that I just have fun with. Apparently some people like to talk about the way I laugh,” Harris said.

Barrymore, who was sitting very close to the vice president on the couch, said enthusiastically, β€œOh yes. Okay. I love your Smile.’

Harris is considered unlikable and even the Democratic National Committee (DNC) has held focus groups on the vice president to understand why voters don’t like her, according to a report this month.

Some voters in the focus groups cited her laugh and others in the group wondered whether President Joe Biden likes her.

The 59-year-old’s approval rating is in the mid-30s β€” an all-time low for the modern vice presidency, as she struggled with bad headlines during her first three years in office.

β€œI have my mother’s smile,” Harris told Barrymore. ‘And I especially grew up with a group of women who laughed from their belly. They were laughing, sitting in the kitchen and drinking their coffee, telling big stories with big laughs.”

“You know, I’ll never be like that,” Harris said before letting out a small chuckle into her hand.

The Democrat continued her story: β€œI’m just not that person. And I think it’s really important that we remind each other and our young people: Don’t be limited by other people’s perception of what this looks like, and who you need to be – how you need to act to be right.”

‘It is very important. It is, it is important,” she concluded.

Barrymore, who is known for her empathetic interview style, responded with, “I love your smile and I love that message.”

Under a video of the vice president’s interview with Barrymre, one user wrote, “The cackling is awkward.”

β€œIt’s cackling and it’s only horrible because of what you’re cackling about,” wrote another.

Many have pointed out not only the way Harris laughs, but also the fact that she often chuckles at inappropriate moments.

She has also been criticized for her ‘word salad’, with many claiming that her anecdotes and stories often lack logic.

Harris, the first-ever female vice president in the US, joins Biden on the 2024 ticket to serve a second term as his vice president.
