Vice President Kamala Harris was ridiculed Tuesday night for feigning a Southern accent during a campaign rally in Atlanta, Georgia.

“You all helped us win in 2020 and we’re going to do it again in 2024,” Harris told voters, brazenly mimicking a Southern accent that drew ridicule from social media users.

Harris often uses a Southern accent when addressing voters in Southern communities, despite the fact that she grew up in San Francisco and spent her high school years in Montreal, Canada.

She also drew criticism for using a much more prominent Southern accent when speaking about her experiences during the 2020 campaign.

“We’ll tell them that Saturday afternoon we were hanging out in a parking lot with Kamala and all of our friends,” Harris said, repeating her vowels at an event in Florida.

At a rally in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Harris also softly promised voters to “repeal President Donald Trump’s tax code.”

Voters in the South derided the vice president as “fake” and “flattery” because her accent did not seem authentic.

Harris also uses a more Southern accent when speaking to black audiences, such as making comments about “preaching” and “testifying” to the truth.

“Do I see people testifying?” she asked, laughing, at an event in Philadelphia in May. “Can I get a witness?”

The tendency to feign a more southern accent is not uncommon among politicians.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton faced similar criticism when she used a drawling tone to Southern voters during her presidential campaign.

“I don’t feel tired at all,” Clinton said during her failed 2008 presidential campaign, quoting civil rights activist James. “I’ve come too far since I started.”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was criticized as a “total fraud” and accused of using a Southern accent at a 2023 event with civil rights activist Al Sharpton.

“I’m proud to be a bartender, there’s nothing wrong with that,” Ocasio-Cortez said, adding in a drawling voice: “This is what changing the country looks like.”
