Vice President Kamala Harris revealed that she owns a Glock pistol as she shared some information about where she goes to make sure she has good aim.
Harris disclosed the information in an interview on CBS’ “60 Minutes,” when correspondent Bill Whitaker asked her about an issue she had only briefly addressed in other contexts.
“I have a Glock and I’ve had it for a while. And – I mean, look, Bill, my background is in law enforcement,” she told him.
Whitaker asked Harris, a former California prosecutor who served as the state’s AG, if she had ever fired the gun.
“Yes,” she replied, laughing. ‘Of course I did. At a shooting range. Yes, of course.’
She was asked about her gun after mentioning it in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. Harris, who had a liberal vote in the Senate and was a strong supporter of gun control, indicated she was willing to use the gun to defend her home.
“If anyone breaks into my house, he’s going to be shot,” she told Winfrey.
Armed: Vice President Kamala Harris told 60 Minutes she owns a Glock pistol
She had previously reported her gun ownership, but many supporters were surprised to hear about it. She did not reveal more about the type of gun she owned. She previously said she was keeping it for personal safety.
Harris also joked about the sensitivity of the issue almost as soon as she made the comment to Winfrey.
She said she “probably shouldn’t have said that” and then joked, “My staff will handle that later.”
Harris was asked what type of gun she owns after recently telling Oprah Winfrey she would use it if someone broke into her house
“If anyone breaks into my house, he’s going to be shot,” she told Winfrey last month
The Glock is commonly issued by law enforcement agencies
Manufactured in Austria and the US, the Glock is a favorite of many police departments and law enforcement agencies.
Her revelations come as rival Donald Trump calls Harris and the Democrats a threat to Second Amendment gun rights.
Both candidates are also locked in a fierce battle for support in states where support for gun rights, especially in rural areas, is strong.
That includes western and central Pennsylvania, where both Trump and Harris are vying for support.
Harris, like Biden, is calling for the reinstatement of the expired ban on assault weapons, a regulation that dates back to the Clinton administration but has now expired.
As a senator, she co-sponsored legislation to regulate ghost guns, ban high-capacity ammunition clips and curb stockpiling.
President Joe Biden also occasionally speaks about how he owns a shotgun, even as he repeatedly demands the return of an assault weapons ban amid a spate of horrific mass shootings and school shootings.
