Kamahl, 89, is charged with stalking a woman 50 years his junior after row sparked by bizarre detail in $5 bank transfer

Australian singing legend Kamahl has been accused of stalking a woman 50 years his junior.

The alleged victim, a 39-year-old woman, has filed for an assault warrant against the 89-year-old singer over allegations that he threatened her after lending her $2,000 to start a business last May.

Kamahl sent the woman the money after agreeing with her over dinner that she would pay him back five dollars a week.

However, he is said to have become upset after the woman wrote “to the harasser” in the transaction description.

There is no indication that Kamahl committed a sex crime and he has never been charged.

Kamahl, who lives on Sydney’s northern beaches, is now charged with stalking with intent to cause fear and is due to appear in Sydney’s Sutherland Court next month.

The Malaysian-born star, whose full name is Kandiah Kamalesvaran, told Nine News that angry text exchanges between him and the alleged victim are a result of him going off his medication.

“I wasn’t bad,” Kamahl said.

“I responded to a situation without all my abilities.”

In a text message to Kamahl, the woman said: “I just wanted to let you know that your behavior is unacceptable and that you are lucky I didn’t go to the authorities.”

Kamahl responded, “You are a liar and a failure and most of all an ungrateful b***h.

‘The best has yet to come.’

Kamahl, whose catchphrase during his long career in show business was “Why are people so unkind?”, said his reaction could be explained by his age and the fact that he is no longer taking medication.

“I’m an 89-year-old man and I reacted in a flash,” he said.

He admitted that his age did not excuse his response “but my mental state at the time did.”

Kamahl then stated that he was not concerned about the incident because “it is what it is.”

“Any publicity is better than no publicity,” he said.

‘I’m sure about that.’

Three years ago, Kamahl divorced his wife Sahodra after 55 years of marriage.

He also admitted at the time that he was addicted to social media.

During last year’s campaign for the Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum, Kamahl’s vote was provoked by both the Yes and No campaigns and he alternated between supporting and opposing the measure before ultimately rejecting it.

After moving to Australia in 1953, Kamahl’s singing career spanned decades, with his 1975 hit The Elephant Song charting overseas.

He became a regular performer on variety shows in the 1980s, 1990s and into the 2000s, most notably on Channel Nine’s long-running Hey, Hey it’s Saturday, where he was often the butt of jokes that led to the program being accused of racism .
