Kalgoorlie shooting: Bloodshed in major Australian mining town as man is shot: ‘Avoid the area’

A major incident takes place in the gold mining town of Kalgoorlie after police rushed to confront a gunman.

In a statement on Friday afternoon, Western Australia Police said officers were called to reports of an armed man in an alley near Whitlock St.

“Firearms were fired and the man was seriously injured,” a spokesperson said. “There is no threat to public safety.”

The man is in his fifties.

Police asked locals to avoid the area while about 20 officers, including forensic specialists, attended the scene.

Police are also investigating a property in nearby Hopetoun St.

Local residents were shocked by the incident.

“It scared my dog, but I didn’t know it was a gunshot,” one resident said ABC news.

“When I saw the police, I realized there was more going on.”

Another local resident said he heard three gunshots.
