Juventus starlet Nicolo Fagioli is reportedly under investigation in Italy for betting on illegal platforms, which could land him a ban of up to three years if found guilty.

Fagioli, 22, broke into the Juventus team last year after an impressive loan spell at Cremonese in 2021-22 and quickly became a key player for head coach Max Allegri.

The midfielder also earned one cap for Italy and has played six times in Serie A so far this season.

However, according to Italian reportsFagioli’s progress could soon be halted, with the Turin public prosecutor’s office now looking into allegations that he bet on unlicensed online sites.

The report said Italian Football Federation prosecutor Giuseppe China was informed of the investigation in late August and handed over the first documents shortly after.

The settlement states that if Fagioli is found guilty, the 22-year-old could be suspended from football for up to 36 months.

The rise of unlicensed betting platforms has been a growing problem in Italy in recent times, with prosecutor Manuela Pedrotta drawing increasing attention to these platforms.

Italian reports then explain how investigators analyzed user access by cross-referencing data and the different transactions carried out, while verifying the real names and nicknames of users registered on these illegal sites.

During this analysis, Fagioli’s name appeared. Although a fine for those who used the illegal sites would normally be sufficient, the fact that the midfielder is a professional sportsman means that the situation is different and a harsher sanction is considered necessary.

Juventus’ new legal problems come after Juventus stripped them of 10 points last year in Serie A and were banned from European football this season by UEFA for alleged financial irregularities.

The investigation – also led by the Turin prosecutor’s office – also saw several former members of the club’s board of directors issue bans from playing football, including former club president Andrea Agnelli and general director of football from Tottenham, Fabio Paratici.

Meanwhile, in England, Brentford striker Ivan Toney was banned from football for eight months after admitting 232 betting offenses, while Nottingham Forest defender Harry Toffolo received a five-month suspension suspended after breaking betting rules 375 times.

Fagioli has not been named in Italy’s squad for their Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and England next week.
