The Minnesota Vikings and NFL leader Justin Jefferson could be approaching a contract extension that could be announced ‘very soon’, according to The Athletics.
“Two weeks ago, when I was in Minnesota, I asked Justin Jefferson about the status of his deal. He had no updates for me and said he “doesn’t like to talk about his business,” according to Dianna Russini.
‘Honestly. He said it with a big smile though, probably because he knows this team is motivated to get it done.’
The 24-year-old Jefferson is currently entering the fourth and final year of his rookie contract, though the team does have a fifth-year option as part of the 2020 first-round draft picks contract.
“Jefferson has been practicing throughout training camp, confident that the team will give him a contract that will allow him to become the highest paid non-QB player in the league,” Russini continued.
The Minnesota Vikings and WR Justin Jefferson may reach a contract extension “very soon.”
Jefferson (18) led the entire NFL last season with 128 receptions and 1,809 receiving yards
Good news for Kirk Cousins, I have learned that there is no concern that Jefferson will miss games if a deal is not reached. Based on my conversations, this appears to be a contract that will be announced (and celebrated) very soon.”
Last season, Jefferson led the NFL with 128 catches and 1,809 yards, plus eight touchdowns.
Since joining the league from LSU, he has amassed a total of 324 catches for 4,825 yards and 25 touchdowns.
Jefferson has been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his three seasons, and last season also earned his first All-Pro selection.
Jefferson will likely reset the WR market, surpassing Adams and Hill’s huge contracts
There is a good chance that Jefferson and his representation will be looking for a contract extension that puts him at the top of the wide receiver market and eclipses the monster deals signed by Las Vegas Raiders wide out Davante Adams and Miami Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill.
Adams currently has the most valuable contract for any WR in the league, as he will earn a total of $140 million by the time his deal expires, while Hill holds the mantle for the highest annual salary of $30 million.
Jefferson and the Vikings will kick off the season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, though there’s no word on whether “very soon” means a new deal will be announced before the Week 1 game or not.
